where you buying the copy from dimsim? pretty ridiculous thats happened twice now
|
| |
bought one copy from the us thru importcds and then another from a local record store. given that the records were sealed when i received them, it doesnt really matter where i buy from since its a manufacturing issue and not a mistake on the seller's part. but still, the chance of the same problem happening twice is pretty ridiculous. i woulda preferred getting the pearl jam copy than a copy with duplicates again.

sealed copies should not have issues like that, whoever is issuing these (Big Brother?) needs to get their shit together.

theres loads of other problems too; of course there's the pearl jam thing, but i've seen a lot of complaints about skips and off-centre labels too. of the five oasis remaster/reissue LPs i bought, 3/5 of them, despite being brand new, have multiple prolonged stretches of crackling on them. doesn't bother me so much, but audiophile types aren't happy; furthermore, it's hardly a normal thing for a significant proportion of a pressing to have those sorts of defects.
i've found that these sorts of widespread problems are symptomatic of records from major labels, who have far more money to fuckin make quality records than indie labels, yet indie label records are very very rarely defective (thas what test presses are for), and defects usually result from damage in transit or on the shelves rather than at the manufacturing stage. my theory is that majors are goin with the usual minimal cost/maximum sales approach, which leads to tons of unhappy customers, but there probably arent enough people who buy records anyway to actually bring these problems to light.
big brother may be oasis' label but i'm sure it's sony, their parent company, who handle the manufacturing end, so im not surprised at the quality of the records. i think the fact that they're on 180g saves em from really serious defects, though, since the extra weight gives the records some durability.
other release that instantly springs to mind when i think about fucked up major label records is the beatles 2009 stereo box set. huge, expensive release from one of the biggest bands of all time and people got records that were fuckin unplayable (and they sent that shit back to the label multiple times and got replacements that were just as unplayable!).

yeah dude you're pretty spot on there i reckon. There's no quality checking, just churning out a record and popping a $40 price tag on it. There really should be more accountability with this stuff as it is frustrating spending your hard earned on a record only for it to be lacking in quality or have stupid errors like you've had twice now.
I'm pretty fortunate my copy of Definitely Maybe sounds good and has no discernable errors, but all the issues I've heard in the past (and now from you) have made me really wary of buying What's the Story.

ok last comment about my fucked up vinyl: the record store who i bought morning glory from second time around sent me sides C and D and im pretty sure they pressed this shit themselves. it hasnt got the etchings its supposed to, the run-out grooves are a lot smaller than the run-out grooves on my sides A and B, the C/D vinyl doesn't feel quite as heavy as the A/B vinyl (though not light either), and the mastering on C/D sounds different from A/B (a little quieter and a little less clear). side C also starts with this warped sounding thing just before "some might say" starts but i wouldnt have put that one past the manufacturers of the actual vinyl.
this has been a fairly strange saga as far as quests to buy one lousy copy of an album go but im undeterred! this phony C/D sounds decent enough to tide me over but i can see myself in about 6 months headin into the city, buyin another copy, and opening it on the counter to make sure everythin's in order.

yeah wouldn't blame you man, I haven't seen it hanging around in many stores though in the city which is weird. If you're referring to melbs i know that Heartland Records in North Melbourne has had it in stock the times I've been there.
|
| |
yea Heartland was the exact store i was thinkin of! fairly expensive stock (occasionally you find a steal on the bargain shelf) but great selection. their online store lists morning glory as in stock so im thinkin they've got it.

yeah nice one! Yeah definitely on the pricier side of things but I've found whatever I've been looking for 9/10 times I've been there. I might go in and pick up a copy of this also when I get around that way again, got Definitely Maybe from there and the pressing is decent.

not a 5 cuz "hello", "hey now!", "cast no shadow" and "she's electric" all don't live up to the other tracks. they're great songs but damn they really pale in comparison.
