"I mean understanding the music at a level that allows you to properly appreciate what the artist was intending the listener to feel after and during listening."
so people should reach a level of understanding where they appreciate the artists intentions? isnt that demanding every listener to like what the musicians done. because to appreciate what an artists done you have to like it surely?

Talking down will about always happen on the internet, man, just gotta accept that. And people shouldn't always have to justify their decisions, though I will agree it adds little to discussion of an album
Not everyone wants to be a part of that discussion tho

"I will prolly listen to the new DGD more than this cuz it's more pick-up-and-go while this completely not that."
illustrates ALLB pretty well I think, I always listen to the full thing and only a few individual songs

@MortimusPrime to some extent I think so. I mean it isn't impossible to like this without understanding it but I'm pretty sure most of the people that like this already liked the artists or similar artists. A Lot Like Birds isn't a great band to jump into listening too if you've never listened to anything similar that may be more accessible.

yeah i agree wit omaha, people don't and shouldn't be required to justify their opinions about everything. the shit-talking will never stop though so getting mad about it is pointless

ahhh ok. but my main point was that is it possible for someone to "understand" or "get" an album and then not like it? or does anyone who dislikes an album simply not "get it" ?

You can totally understand something and not like it. There aren't an enormous amount of albums I feel that way about but I'd say a good amount of the albums I feel 2.5ish about I get but don't like.

I feel like there will be people who dislike it initially but will like it a lot if they give it time. Based on my own personal experience, of course.

thats a good point actually. if somethings a 1 or a 1.5 i usually don't understand what anyone sees in most or all of it. for something to be a 2.5 you have to understand it has something but just not like it

Yeah exactly. I did a review of Death In June album that I feel that way about and a few contributors said they liked the way I described the feeling pretty well if you want to check it.

Absolutely, knowledge of an album doesn't indicate enjoyment of it. However, albums we enjoy often reel us in to let us understand them more
Listened to the new Karnivool album about twenty times to figure out why I didn't like it too much

I know I'm late to this conversation but
"A song like "No Place" is very hard to grasp on the first listen, and just because it makes more sense with future listens doesn't mean that first impression isn't worth considering."
there is no song called No Place

I want these guys to get better known:
1) they deserve it
2) they would finally make it to Europe so I could see them live
Anyway in France even people who listen to post hxc don't know anything about neither DGD nor ALLB. sad and lonely life I have.
