Perhaps in your opinion but I think it's pioneering enough to be in the "spirit" of prog. Also, Gazpacho?! Never heard anything quite like Demon

"Still don't think those alt-prog bands are really true to the spirit of prog though."

I haven't heard Demon but the 3 Gazpacho albums I have heard just sounded like Radiohead style alt rock with longer songs.

@JT Definitely check out Demon. It's unlike anything theyve done before and if you still think prog is dead:

if anything, I'd argue there's more experimentation going on in prog than before but I'd also say there are more clones
right now.

haha idk man I find it funny because it's as some bullshit ass undefinable term used as a detractor of music
|

Dude Unexpect is prog metal, I'm talking about prog rock. Also that was an absolute mess, can't say I dig that stuff.
I'd argue there's more experimentation going on in prog than before

"Still don't think those alt-prog bands are really true to the spirit of prog though."
This is an all encompassing statement dude and is a reflection of the entire 'industry' post 2000.
I love hijacking your statements JT cos they always speak truth.

You're talking about just prog rock? Oh, I thought you were talking about prog in general, my bad. It's a beautiful mess, JT :]
|
| |
I kinda was to begin with but it's hard to compare prog metal to the real prog of the 70's cos it wasn't even a thing back then.
Sup zak, you're hijacking is always welcome.

Lol guys seriously? First of all, it's not the 70s anymore. It's 2014 and if every other band tried to be like 70s prog bands then shit would get boring. Plus some notable band's have tried releasing prog in the spirit of 70s prog and it gets lots of negative feedback so...

Sometimes the way forward requires letting go of the past.

Absolutely. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick Mongi (at least with regards to what I was saying) because I agree with you about the 70's thing completely.
I try to steer clear of almost all modern bands who play 70's "throwback" prog cos it mostly just ends up being some boring imitation/rip off that is anything but progressive.
What I meant by most alt-prog bands not being true to the spirit of prog is not that they don't sound like old school 70's prog (it's a positive thing that they don't if anything) but that they just aren't progressive in nature or innovative like the classic prog bands were. I mean it's got to a point where prog these days is pretty much one of the least progressive and forward thinking non-mainstream styles of music out there and alt-prog is almost as big an offender as throwback prog because most of it just rehashes old ideas within a more contemporary sound, it just isn't progressive.
