Yeah, for me that is the most annoying thing about it. It took them 4 years to release this and it ended up not being worth the wait. 4 years of writing and this is all they could come up with?

I was almost certain that this album would be a 4.5. Easily. After writing a fucking phenomenal album, and all their experience from touring I was expecting an incredible album. But all we got was just a "great" album. And after 4 years of waiting, "great" just doesn't cut it.
I'm all for experimentation but if this is the type of material they put out then I rather they just play it safe and make a Sound Awake 2.0.

This is weird for the sake of being weird. Biggest reason why I don't dig it.

Hopefully the next wait won't be another four years. Eager to see what they do next.

I think experimenting in general is a very fine line to be on. You should do it when the band is naturally changing, not force it just to make a different album otherwise it sounds artificial.
And then when you do experiment and change your fundamentals as a band, people either complain that it isn't the same, complain that it sounds stale, or rarely, actually dig it.

Definitely a grower. Some top notch shit on this album.
|
| |
the drums on this are way too erratic there's like no grooves its all just bum bum da bum woah look at these rando time sigs ha ha we're a cool band aren't we
right drummerboy you feel me?
|
| |
Not really, I always felt Karnivool naturally implemented time signatures in their songs. There's some pretty gnarly grooves on here too. Aeons, We Are, Sky Machine etc.
The Refusal is a bit of a wank fest on drums but I like it haha.
|
| |
they certainly did it on the first two but on this one it feels almost forced or contrived

Definitely feels very forced. Wtf is with the overuse of the snare I can't get over that. The drums have a very monotonous feel to them.
|
| |
there's always been tons of snare but it's a lot of ghost notes and shit like i've watched the dvd that came with this twice now and there's so much more snare that you don't even notice on the records, i guess it's mixed out or something but yeah on the dvd and on this one it's really obvious

It just really sticks out on this record for some reason and that's the worst part.

There's probably like one in one thousand music fans that enjoy these stupid filler interludes on albums. Why on earth bands continue to put them on albums is beyond me. NO ONE listens to that shit. They skip it every time. What is the point?

Interludes are okay at the beginning of an album.

the experimenting is cool, even if shallow, but the rest is meh.

Yea it's a shame this really could have been better. It might even drop to a 3 the next time I listen oh well.

"Damn, the rating on this really dropped."
Give it till the end of the year when it has almost the same amount of votes as their other albums. Will prob go to a 4.
