it almost sounds like they are as surprised and happy that the sound works as i am when listening to it, if that makes sense. it feels like they've discovered themselves and it is joyous to hear that kind of thing on a record.

and the uplifting-ness of it makes it all the more effective when they go into a more depressive, minor riff

Only a few bands who play 'Blackgaze' really know how to pull that off Funeral.
Deafheaven obviously, Woods of Desolation, An Autumn for Crippled Children, and Alcest/Lantlos at times.
Also I could argue Entropia, but they are more on the Sludge side at times than BM. (give it a listen tho, it's awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlKsIgjtpyw)

seeing them tonight with Boris. when I bought the tickets I was excited to see Boris play all of Flood, now I'm completely stoked on seeing Deafheaven pull this off live since EVERY other time they've played Los Angeles in the last 2 years I haven't been able to go.

lol wiz i have heard enough blackgaze to know how good this is. no other band sounds like this though, tbh. this doesn't even sound like a metal record.
Wow, the hypebole on this site just stepped up to a whole new level. Just amazed at how people have convinced themselves this goes wayyyyyyyyyyy beyond anything metal hasn't touched. This is so squarely rooted in black metal it's not even funny. In fact, this is so rooted in black metal/ shoegaze that it makes no sense to try and catagorize it otherwise.
But whatever, I'm acting like an asshole. Feel free to dodge the reality of this album as long as you understand that your 4.5-5 ratings WILL drop hard in time once you fully understand where this band stands within the metal scene. I'm not saying this isn't a great record (totally subjective), I'm just saying this is one of the first albums within it's genre to break free of the scene and find it's way into new listeners speakers. Look at the amount of sites covering this album right now and tell me it has nothing to do with the hype? If the latest Vhol album where to be featured on Pitchfork, Stereogum, etc. they would be as popular as these guys.
I've said my piece on this, feel free to disagree.

So basically this review is calling this album "liberal black metal". That is something I cannot stand for.

Entropia are also very good yes. Not as good as this but very good. And to beat a dead horse: Hope
Drone.
New Fauna also rules, but everyone seems to have forgotten about that one.

I like the more aggressive side of BM, so I never really found CBR that appealing. An Autumn for Crippled Children's first album is pretty good, though.

i've heard all of those. remind me again which ones have this much screamo influence?
