"For you it may be love, for me it's having some delicious kebab while getting blown by a fuckbuddy while watching Naruto episodes."
Well, that is a sight...
I am one of the few people who pretty much enjoys 95% of his output (and that does mean that I am one of those idiots that enjoys Devlab, Hummer and HAARHT) and so the likelihood I would at least enjoy this was high. Of the five album cycle, it is the weakest for me but "Where we Belong" is exactly what I need this year even if the acoustic version was much better, imo. And as others have said, several of the tracks on this are really gorgeous and smile inducing.
The only thing I would say really negative about this album is that the blatant borrowing of "Stand" on "Grace" still puts me off a bit. "Stand" is far superior in tone, message and execution. Still love "Grace", though.

...Pardon me? You have to be an idiot to enjoy Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing? Jeez. It's not a strong album, but it has some good tracks.

I was being sarcastic. :P It is my personal favorite of the SYL series of records (I think people tend to overlook that he had signed a 5 album deal and that is the reason the self titled, Alien and New Black were even made in the first place). But you know as well as I do how people are about that record.
City is this great monolithic giant everyone raves about and HAARHT is the ugly, underachieving older sibling.
So no, I don't actually think you have to be an idiot to enjoy any of his records. I was just mocking those who feel that anytime he is not doing Ocean Machine, City, or Alien that he is shooting in the dark.

Oh, hahah, I misread in the first place, I thought you said "I'm NOT one of those idiots". Sorry about that.
I'd say I'm one of said group of people who enjoy 95%- or more, if I'm honest- of his work. I've always said, if I were to be stuck on a desert island, and could only have one discography to listen to, I'd see if I could count everything he's done as one discography. It's so diverse, I'd have any kind of song I need, really.

Indeed. And it would be a long enough seclusion that even the songs I haven't really gotten into (some of them are on the demoes compilations) would start to connect with me.

Forgot to say: "songs like “Where We Belong”, “Grace”, and “More!” feel empty and bereft of a soul" is a bit of a strange thing to say. Some of his energetic and engaging singing is on "Where we Belong" and "Grace" which shows that he evidently feels what he is saying. But different feels in response to his feels I guess have we.

Actually, that's a pet peeve of mine about any review. Assuming an artist meant or didn't mean something based purely on how you feel about the music is self-important and presumptuous.

I think it may just be the impulsive reaction that many people to expressions that don't connect with them on emotional levels.

Getting a choir to say "bullshit" in a song is sex for the ears.

If I made a list, making the internets not fun anymore would be near the top. ;) lol Seriously, some of the threads on this forum make me glad I am too ancient to give a fuck.

What do you guys think of the demo CD, Epiclouder? I think it's at least as good as Epicloud, maybe even better. It's mostly songs that wouldn't have fit on Epicloud, but most of the songs are ridiculously good nonetheless. Little Pig makes the world taste yummy

I've only listened to it once so far, but I thought it was pretty darn good. I'll have to give it a few more listens and get back to you.

'Heatwave' could've slotted nicely in between Where We Belong and Save Our Now. 'Little Pig' would have made a sweet "Hidden Track" or whatever after Angel, like what he did on Physicist and Terria and Synchestra. 'Believe' could have taken the place of Divine; similar effect, but Believe is better. Etc, etc, etc, you get the point. I think a lot of the Epiclouder tracks could have fit the flow of the actual album well, and a lot of them are better than some of the actual album tracks.
At the very least, 'Heatwave' should have made the cut. It was only dropped at the last minute if I remember correctly...Why?!

Honestly, from my listen, nothing on Epiclouder sounded like it would have fit on Epicloud. Again, gotta re-listen, but I remember thinking "These are AWESOME. But I see why they didn't fit in".

"These are AWESOME. But I see why they didn't fit in"
Precisely. But I think some of the junkier songs on Epiclouder were just Epicloud-ish songs that didn't make the cut because they frankly kinda suck. Anyway there's enough awesome standalone songs to make it an awesome "album".

One of a handful of modern musicians that has yet to disappoint me...thank you for you consistency Devy. Good review, while I feel it deserves a little higher of a rating I get it, and enjoyed the write up.
