First half's great but the second half sounds same-ish the entire time. Albums catchy as balls though

"It's "goddamn." You're not supposed to use the Lord's name in vain, so by it's very definition, "goddamn" is indeed a curse word."
Fair enough. I couldn't give less of a fuck about saying the lord's name in vain, which is probably why I don't see it as a curse. I suppose you're right though.

"Not sure how I feel about this album yet, it definitely doesn't have the immediate punch of Silver Cord or even Vagabonds"
I think that's a fair call Freak... & the fact that you aren't quite sure how you feel about the album, gives me a little bit of confidence that you sense it is a grower.
Great to see some love for 'The Precipice' too.

"Davey it's late and I cba to read the review (although I will at a later date). Yes or no mate?"
Tbh, when I'm talking about what is a genuine AOTY contender for me - in any year - the answer will always be "yes".

That'll do for me. Something to listen to tomorrow.

As per usual, I miss the obvious abbreviation.
Well, I guess that if you can't find anything to like in that lot, you won't find much to like here.
|

Okay Davey, you might just be onto something with this. Heaven and Hell - The Precipice - Let Me Die
is a ridiculously good (and emotionally draining) trio, love it.

Ahhh, glad to hear you like it Rosco. And I'm certain you'll add 'Beautiful Darkside' to that soon.
Your point about them being "emotionally draining" is a good one... And another reason why placing them all together in the middle of the track-list is a risky decision.
|
| |
The exclusion of Beautiful Darkside wasn't a slight on the track, again it's fantastic; heck
the whole album is brilliant (I might be joining your 4.5 for this very soon).
In your review, you too mention an emotional drain, only you refer specifically to the first five
tracks. I get the idea, but I’d argue that the three I’ve highlighted are more pertinent to the
point you made. It’s not really a matter of intensity as the whole thing is as emotionally-charged
as anything I can think of in recent memory, rather I think that Beautiful Darkside and Glass Houses
sound and feel like bookends of a sort, they’re both more energetic than the trio in between and
almost enclose their "emotionally draining" aura. It's a clever effect and I think it works well at
segregating the weightier emotions on the album from the others, and in turn making the whole thing
hit heavier.
It goes against your impression of a contentious track ordering a little, but to me it seems very
intentional. Anyway good work on the review, had I bothered to read it last night I’d have been as
persuaded to check this out as I was by your AOTY threats.
As an aside, I used the word emotional a lot there; methinks I need to expand my vocabulary.

Davey, you might want to give Maker, Seahaven, and The American Scene a listen. I wouldn't compare them to this, but they aren't too disimilar.

Hmm, interesting way of looking at that track ordering Rosco. And I get what you mean too. The bottom line is that they must have had a reasoning for placing those 3 (or 4) songs together in the middle... & your thoughts are the best I have seen thus far. The only thing I'd say is that I don't really see 'Beautiful Darkside' as an "energetic" tune. What comes before it is the encloser imo.
Chippy, you should change your user-name to TheRecommender. If you wrote reviews, I'm betting your Reco by Reviewer section would be longer than mine... & that's saying something!
Nothing's stopping you A a-M.

Get in the queue. Only so many people can read my reviews at the one time. I'm like the Sputnik version of season tickets.
