i don't understand how something could be given a classic rating when it's only been out for... hell, it's not even officially out yet. i'm not trying to discredit your review or anything, i haven't even listened to this, but this seems a bit hyperbolic.

I've been listening to this for a while, but even if I hadn't been, I don't think it is necessary to wait several years before giving an album a perfect score.

Lately it seems like there's a rule against giving new releases a 5/5

It's silly to have to wait before giving a 5 to an album.

If that's the way your mind works then go ahead, but different strokes for different folks, man. I always get annoyed when users call out others for their method of rating - it's dependent upon how that person perceives the rating system itself. Sure, a 3.5 is considered "great" on here, but the definition of great changes from person to person. RateYourMusic even has the option of users stating what their definition of each rating is - that's what it should be all about.

I think the 'official titles' of the ratings here throw people off. For instance, with the title 'Classic' many assume that a 5 has to be timeless, flawless and unforgettable. Yeah, it should be lovely, but more often we find ourselves noting the flaws in an album and still loving it for what it is.

If it were up to me there wouldn't be a rating system at all

I like ratings. Dramatically lowers my required reading time on this site.

I wouldn't go that far sowing. What drew me in to this site was being able to rate albums. I'd just do away with the titles attached to the numbers. Also, whole numbers out of 10 instead of .5 intervals out if 5 would look better IMO but now I'm just being picky.

auberginedreams: Doesn't make what I said any less true or relevant (and yeah, this is streaming).

Aids: "Pretty sure he just heard it for the first time within the last 48 hours just like the rest if us" Why make presumptions? What has he said to make you believe that?

What SowingSeason said makes perfect sense - why should time be a weighing factor in something's worth? Things can age well, sometimes ending up more greatly appreciated years/decades later than they were at the time, but that doesn't mean they can't be labelled 5-worthy upon release. I think the problem is that Sputnik's rating system labels 5 as 'classic,' which in and of itself means lasting significance, but there are other factors to consider.

Anyone who takes the label each rating is granted seriously needs to stop.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind either a 1-10 system or a 1-5 star scale with no labels attached other than the star.

But it is my dream to have someone actually read every review they encounter to determine its worth instead of glancing at the numerical value assigned above it

"But it is my dream to have someone actually read every review they encounter to determine its worth instead of glancing at the numerical value assigned above it"

In an ideal world, this would happen.

Yeah I'll be honest I generally glance at the score, read the summary and maybe the opening and closing paragraphs then start making useless comments. About like...30% of the time I actually read the whole thing though. And I always do if it's a reviewer I like (sowing for example)
