Yeah but his lyrics and subtle wordplay are great, too. Just masked in a conversational style and you have to look for the subtext a lot of the time. And yeah I agree with you. I think a lot of people would look for/realize that if they weren't so quick to dismiss it because it's Drake.

Especially in Sufjan's case its more of an atmopheric touch, and with both Bon Iver and Sufjan its not used to the "T-Pain" degree as I like too call it, and theres using it as a production tool for atmosphere and is used with subtlety in mind.
