although I almost hear how a song like "when doves cry" comes CLOSE to being trash, like it's definitely a hard thing to pull off, but it's genius in the end

This is such a stellar album, but am I the only one who finds "darling Nikki" annoying and a bit much lyrically?
It comes across like "alright time to throw in a song about getting down and dirty, but in the cheesiest way possible. The kids will love it."

"darling nikki" is definitely a lot but it's an awesome song. I think even if you dont enjoy the particular manifestation of it you have to take prince's desire to cross boundaries as collateral "damage" to his musical personality. "sister" in '80 and "darling nikki" in '84 must have been really genuinely subversive I'd say back in the day so even though it may have worn off over time....idk yah I get what you mean though

I enjoy a fair portion of this, but Sign O’ The Times seems kind of all over the place and possibly a little bloated, the ratio of good to not-so-good is rather unfavourable so far... *hides*.

"when doves cry" is probably better than "purple rain" yeah, although the latter is great too...I thought Sign O The Times sucked when I first heard it but it grew on me greatly. still a bum track here and there though
