But that's precisely the problem. That's what I find objectionable, that they were fortunate enough to garner a fanbase entirely comprised of "their mothers" (you know, as in whenever you ask your mother her opinion about something you made and she always tells you it looks fantastic), and they can afford to not push the envelope and still make a pretty buck and that's exactly what they're doing.
You're always going to have fans of any band that will take whatever they release and love it... but I never thought that was an "issue" with Dream Theater.
It seems to me like the reason Mike left is because of how hard the inner circle of fans was to satisfy. He even wrote songs about it. (As I Am and Never Enough)
Even in interviews after BCSL was released he said "I think we're going back to the 'old style' of writing," as if to appease that inner circle. The reason he did A7X and is doing Adrenaline Mob is so he didn't need to spend so much blood sweat and tears on a song only to have it "meh'd" by the fanbase.
Nearly every band is this way. Fans look back with rose-colored glasses on the old material as if it was gospel.
All of that aside, the departure of Mike was a sobering ordeal for the rest of the guys. Dream Theater is always going to have a cheesy sound to it because of LaBrie's voice. It comes with the territory.
When you get into this kind of music you have to deal with the guitarists and other "band kids" because they believe technicality is god above all else. We've got middle-aged men trying to straddle that line between technicality and musicality, with a fanbase of teenagers who think anything in 29/16 time is going to sound good and so they can feel smart because they listen to it.

Not bad, but way too safe. I guess it makes sense with the change of direction. Indication that the next release should be pretty good, since this is still rather solid.
I don't really like albums like that, to be honest. I feel like we've been saying that for a while now with Dream Theater.
"Oh, they'll get it next time, I'm sure of it."

Not trying to be Metallica with a keyboard player? Sorry just don't understand that comment, don't see where that came from.
I was listening to Constant Motion a couple of years ago, my dad came into my room and said "that band sounds exactly like Metallica."
I was on vent and someone had music playing in the background. I asked "Is that Metallica you're listening to?"
"No, it's Dream Theater."

I like this album. Feels very earnest to me. I wouldn't say the material is particularly groundbreaking, but I feel as if it's being played by guys in their 20s rather than their mid-40s.

Beneath The Surface = among the best ballads ever written. I may definitely push this to a 4 at least.

probably Jethro. This isn't average, but it isn't great either imo.

Yeah I could see me bump it down if anything. Up to now, I find 1, 2, 3 and 8 enjoyable enough, but I still need to give it another whirl tbh.

Also, the drums are not only bland, they're ridiculously low profile if compared to the in-the-face a la Portnoy.

Breaking All Illusions is their most solid song since Octavarium. Maybe earlier.

I'm really diggin this album the more I listen to it. The only songs I'm not in love with is On the Back of Angels and This is the Life, though both are still good. And admittedly I don't care for that synth part in the middle of Beneath the Surface, but otherwise its a solid song.
