I doubt it'll be that drastic. I'm hoping it ends up sort of like Lambchop's Flotus - though I doubt we'll see Matt exploring autotune.

That sounds pretty far fetched too haha but it'll be a change in style regardless

If you listen closely there's already quite a bit of electronic touches on Trouble Will Find Me, likely it'll just be an extension of that.

I just get a feeling the biggest change will be something to do with the rhythm section, similar to the changes with Radiohead and mid period Wilco.
Can see some krautrock or indie dance influence getting mixed in

HV and Trouble both added more instrumentation and electronics but it was mostly in the background of service to their established sound. The band said that they're going in a new direction, being electronic / math rock, which is pretty hard to imagine this band playing. Whatever it sounds like I'm sure it'll be brilliant.

I have a feeling they were exaggerating a bit about the math rock part at least. The new songs they've been playing live haven't been all too different from their past work, though I guess studio versions could sound quite different, as is the case with when Radiohead debut new songs live versus how they sound on record. But yeah no matter what the new stuff sounds like I'm sure I'll love it.

"Lucky You" is probably one of the saddest songs I've ever heard, but then that's only fitting for an album called Sad Songs

Can't stop listening to this. I think this has actually eclipsed Boxer as my fourth favorite. Fantastic stuff and imho deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as their big four

One of the all-time greatest bands but opinions are opinions ¯_(ツ)_/¯

eh i can't get behind the apathy in the vocals, everything just feels edgeless and the instrumentation doesn't strike me as much of anything but i guess i still vaguely see the appeal.

You're right they don't even dreamgaze, therefore they must suck

but do they bone

Oh hell yes they do
Dylan I enjoy this one but for me it's nowhere near their big 4. "Lucky You" and "Available" are top 20 National songs.

This album has a good handful of their best songs (Cardinal Song, Slipping Husband, 90-Mile Water Wall, Available, Fashion Coat, Lucky You). It just doesn't come together as a whole like the next four albums do...

if this album had more tracks like 'available' would be an 4.5

Boney and Ocean, I think the diversity on this one appeals to me and plays a big role in why I prefer it to Boxer (if not by much). Every song on the latter is at least a 3, and a few of them are phenomenal ("Racing like a Pro" is a contender for my favorite National song), but it is so uniform in tone that I find it slightly draggy as a full listen. The boys' approach here is livelier, more varied, and carries a certain youthful/ramshackle charm to it.
papudo, "Available" is one of the best tracks here but I'd have to go with "Lucky You" as my #1 pick from this album - heartbreaking tune and another candidate for my favorite National song.

Were this band ever strictly 'youthful'?
