yeah i mean i sort of understand the comparison but most of that can just be attributed to them both being post-punk bands. the two bands really aren't nearly as similar as some people would have you believe. there are bands that rip off joy division much more blatantly (editors) and get way less flack for it. most post-punk bands have singers with pretty low singing voices, it's not like that is something unique to these two bands. other than the fact that they are both fairly dark post-punk bands with a singer whose voice lies in the baritone range, there's really not much else that joy division and interpol have in common. the whole thing just got blown out of proportion and by a certain point critics who would have otherwise not even noticed any similarity between the two bands felt obligated to make the whole "paul banks=ian curtis" accusation in order to look credible and not out of the loop.

their original drummer was in saetia, but he only appears on their first ep. after that they got their
current drummer, who has been on all of their albums.

does anybody know anything similar to this that's good? i've gone through like 30 post-punk/post-punk revival bands in the last week and while i've found some good stuff, nothing comes close to this album for me.

they sound different, but id say public strain is similar. both are tight, gloomy records whose brilliance you realize more and more over time

I know that Interpol was influenced by Joy Division, because I do hear similarities, I don't understand why everyone bitches about them copying, If that is the case I think all music should be shot down, cause pretty much everyone is influenced by something. Either way, the Joy Division bashing is kinda dumb, because I do not see your outlook. Calling Closer boring isn't enough of an excuse for it to suck. Nor does it sound like you say it does.

yeah but i mean why rip of joy division when you can rip off mission of burma or television or something

thanks a lot man, i'll check it out. i've heard of women but i've never actually taken the time to listen to them. any other ideas? i just can't get enough of this band, especially this record. i've been a big fan for years but lately i've gone back on a huge interpol kick after not listening to them for a while. this is seriously one of my all time favorite albums.

There is a major difference between "post-punk" and "post-punk revival," I don't see why people don't get that.
Interpol are one of the few bands that are able to pull off the "post-punk revival" genre pretty well, but even then they're nothing really special aside from this album.

this band is a lot closer to actual post-punk than a lot of their post-punk revival peers though. especially on this album. even antics seemed really influenced by bands like the chameleons. i understand what you're saying though, but i just happen to love this band, especially their earlier albums. i listen to a lot of older post-punk too, but the cheesy 80's production turns me off of a lot of bands i would otherwise enjoy.
