hmm...I see the thread slowly moving towards the genre war that Knott and I were trying to avoid.
|

ok, that makes sense...
how about Native Nod, Navio Forge, Portrait, Maximillian Colby, Heroin, Embrace, Angel Hair, or Antioch Arrow?... just
naming prominent emo band that were important... or are they all sorta derivative?
I don't have a very good timeline on those.
EDIT: lol no no no war, I just know mappy knows a lot about this and I was wondering his opinion

I don't care for genre wars I would just like some clue of what is emo because I've seen Snowing and SDRE and Rites of Spring all described that way and I'm the first person to admit when I'm unsure where genre lines start and stop, I think I'm fairly good around the pop-rock/alt-rock/pop-punk side of the spectrum and I'm curious as to what makes something emo.

Yeah those bands definitely deserve mention, they're just generally stuff that I tend to overlook for some reason.
To be honest, Snowing reminds me of a lot of '90s midwest emo.

Emoness without homosexuality.
It's hard to place your finger on it at first, but when you've been listening to the shite for years on end it starts to make sense.
Also, pop punk type stuff tends to follow a very cliche vocal styling.

Decent description!
(but that would definitely make tracks like Masterpiece by Bayside emo. Just saying.

Knott: the best answer I can give you (which admittedly isn't the best answer you can get) is... I like to look at a bands' influences. Yes, sound-wise Snowing has a lot i common now with pop-punk peers, but certain aspects of the sound-- the whininess, the "messy" guitar style, the lack of focus, the meandering "twinkly" guitars, even their attitude and song names and style and stuff, among other things, reminds me that they derive pretty clearly from a midwestern emo style. that's my opinion, anyway.

I guess Emmure is emo because of their Bayside influence lolololol.
No but I never heard their first album, are they in the same boat as Thursday where they started out emo and then branched out?
IDK link me something.

This is real true, but the dudes also really like pop punk (I mean John Galm was in Audio Recording Club) and I can see that influence too, I just don't think it's the more prevalent end of their sound.

This thread got ridiculous. If you just want to learn about emo, check out fourfa.com. It won't cover screamo or much
midwest style emo, but there's a lot of history to the genre as a whole there. Although honestly I always think of
midwest emo as being closer to alt/indie or pop-punk, than to old school emo or newer screamo stuff, whereas I think
it's really easy to see a mostly-linear evolution of the 90's emo sound up to todays screamo sound.

i love both, but I think that their songwriting definitely improved a bit on this record.

the singer has such a fackin horrible voice. he's definitely one to lock in the basement when the relatives are round singing carols. that's what murdered FYEBs for me. his voice reminds me of an old tone-deaf friend who received an award in 6th grade for singing hymns so loud. I couldn't believe what was happening, in the same way I can't believe people would spend time and money writing good songs only to have someone's obnoxious wailing plastered over the top. i suppose many of you find it endearing. but the writing on this release is better than FYEBs imo. i'm thinking a 3.
