Honestly doesn't sound particularly dark to me, and yes it does sound like Deftones...you're all missing my point and I don't think I can explain it well enough so don't worry. But I still maintain Abe's drumming is completely different, you can at least hear that surely.

I'm not following you. It's the Deftones, every album has had a different vibe to it. Abe is still doing the same thing he's been doing on every other album, albeit throwing different beats and time signatures. And it is a rather dark album, it almost feels like an extension of White Pony. You've got the whole sex and violence theme running through it, as well lyrics relating to watching/pervesely admiring from a distance

Yeah, but it all sounds lighter, despite the lyrical themes. And I know they've done something different in every album, maybe its because I got into them in 2006 and so I'm used to their other sounds. To me it sounds nothing like White Pony though, I'm really not hearing that comparison. If anything it's closest to their self-titled or AFT.

And no, Abe's drumming was much much heavier on other albums, here his beats are more standard and/or fun. Previously they've mainly been as dark as the everything else (seriously, he's my favourite drummer - I hear emotion in his beats xDD)

Define his drums being 'heavier', please

Yeah, but it all sounds lighter, despite the lyrical themes.

It all depends on how you take/percieve it I guess. I mean, I look at Beauty School and Rocket Skates and hear a continuation of the ideas explored in White Pony.

For instance, "You're red, soaking wet" brings to mind imagery I associate with Digital Bath, and I sense that's deliberate on Chino's part

I can't, that's the problem I'm having and why I gave up. Thicker? Blockier? I dunno.

Well everyone is going to take something different from it obviously, as all albums tend to do. But despite the increased sense of 'chug' this sounds a lot like White Pony to me. Not a direct sequel, but along the same lines. Musically and thematically

I think this is (yet another) example of us having to agree to disagree man.

Once again (I feel like I'm always saying this), I have to agree with Deviant. Diamond Eyes sounds like a culmination of their past three albums in one, and I think Abe's drumming (while it has progressed), feels like a logical extension of his core sound. In fact, after about 10 listens, I'd say that's what Diamond Eyes is: an extension and progression of the core Deftones sound, albeit streamlined quite a bit.

Sure, it sounds more optimistic at times, but the lyrics are as dark as ever. I'm not saying it's the best thing they've ever done, but it's certainly their most focused outing. Instead of a stream of consciousness approach like they took on Around the Fur and White Pony, it feels like each track is executed exactly like they planned it. Rather than the outright progressive nature of s/t and Saturday Night Wrist, the expansive/progressive elements feel more natural this time around. For some reason, I keep going back to the word "focused," and I feel like that word sums up Diamond Eyes in a pretty consice manner.

All good with me man. I wasn't trying to prove you wrong, because like I said any band, and the 'tones in particular reveal different moods/ideas for different listeners. Some connect, some don't. It's all gravy in my book

Once again (I feel like I'm always saying this), I have to agree with Deviant

Like you'd want it any other way

On a side note; Beauty School might just be the best thing they've done yet

Beauty School is awesome, up there with Sextape, Butcher and Diamond Eyes for my favorite on the record. Also, Royalty rocks.

I will agree though, Beauty School is definitely in top 3 songs by them (Change, Kimdracula).

Also, I think Chino's lyrics have suffered this time round. However, I still give the album a 4 so obviously I still love it. xD

Chino is fucking awesome on Royal. The ending is one of the best moments on the album.
