not now though since mj ruined any chance of legitimate discussion about this album
yeah because there actually was legitimate discussion of this album or even Jane Doe before MJ arrived here and people were thinking critically about this album and not just sitting around saying "omg interview at the ruins fucking owns man"

it actually runs from three years ago to December 2009

Whereas now there's legitimate discussion along the lines of this review. Great point.
MJ's criticisms of Jane Doe would only resonate with people who don't enjoy music for the right reasons.
His more recent reviews are better because they actually discuss non-pretentious, relevant facets of the music at hand rather than axioms and albums written by nobody.

"MJ's criticisms of Jane Doe would only resonate with people who don't enjoy music for the right reasons."
Since you made the generalization, please explain

that was what, three years ago? people dont give a shit anymore
As recent history (read: two weeks ago) shows. Part of the Staff always try to give this nonchalant attitude towards users who despise this album, yet they have to post churlish comments against said users in every thread.
|

soooo... why are we caring about what other people think of our opinions, no less over the internet?
|
| |
Ghost- But it's okay for them to do it, just not us, right?

no i can see Adam Knott's point that MJ's review of Converge was based on a sociological critique and made outrageous claims that are very difficult for a lot of musical purists to swallow. it's legitimate
but yeah discussion of this CTTS album was incredibly one-sided. anyone who rated it low and criticized it got attacked mercilessly.
thanks to ConsiderPhlebas'/BrokenJewel's review of this album and Emim's hopefully people should see that there is good reason to dislike this album and it's not just hateful trolling, but they got written off as "just copying MJ" or some bullshit. BigHans' review was also a fun and humorous critique of the band's whole persona and mentality but of course that got taken down

i generally like the user Kitsch but it's comments like this one from 2008, which many members of the Staff echoed in their own posts, that really piss me off:
anyone who has rated this [ATRU] lower than a 4.5 should listen to it again and again until they are overcome with its awesomeness

I'll explain:
There are plenty of reasons not to like Jane Doe. That it's 'an album written by nobody' and 'a symptom' are not included in those reasons.

so far my super-serious generalization from 2 years ago has not been proven wrong!

Adam Downer/ElectricCity wrote a year and a half ago that
My english teacher wants us to bring in some of our favorite lyrics I'm thinking of bringing in either "Interview at the Ruins," "In a Sweater Poorly Knit," or the opening monologue to "Dead Flag Blues." Probably gonna end up going with "Dead Flag Blues," but the point is going through ctts lyrics made me appreciate how awesome they are.
i seriously want to know if ElectricCity brought in CTTS lyrics to an English class...and whether this was a highschool or a college English class

That's what upsets me the most about this album. Not just the fact that I think it's an abomination and it's grating on my ears, but the fanboys are absolutely ridiculous. The album is supposed to be this "intelligent work of art," but no one can really give me an honest, true reason to enjoy it.

isnt it being an intelligent passionate work of art reason enough?
and it was high school and i went with dead flag blues

Album Rating: 4.5 | Sound Off
You shouldn't need a reason. You either enjoy it or you don't. Why do you need someone else to tell you that you should like it for reason x?
I personally think that the lyrics are sublime.

this really summarizes the whole atmosphere surrounding this album on Sputnik up to the beginning of this year --
AtavanHalen wrote:
Officially re-listening with a bit more understanding of their genre. Rating beforehand: 1.5/5
Rating now: Stay tuned.
then Rasputin wrote:
Pretty sure you're just going to pretend to like it now so the entire community doesn't think you're an idiot.
AtavanHalen responded:
I haven't cared what they thought up until this point, fail to see how that will change now.
then Rasputin alluded to the fact that AtavanHalen dared to write a negative review of this album and he just got repeatedly attacked for it:
Yeah you did, you wrote a review bagging it and when everyone tore you a new one you had it deleted and were like 'oh yeah maybe i was wrong'. Be a man, man.
AtavanHalen finally explained his reason for taking down the review was that he thought it wasn't his best but also more so that people kept giving him shit for not liking the album:
The reason I got that review deleted was because it was reflecting on EVERYTHING I was doing, I couldn't even leave a comment saying that I thought a review was good without someone going "how could you not like that album" etc. On top of that, I felt the review itself wasn't exactly up to scratch.

Adam Downer, you've tried to evade giving your reasons for making certain claims up to this point, but seriously, can you explain how this is an "intelligent passionate work of art"
like, not even being a dickhead. i seriously would be astounded to see you even half-decently justify this statement
|
| |
for the record.. intelligent work of art it is not
actually much respect for you saying this, Lewis, even if you continue to like it. because i think that claiming that this is an intelligent work of art is an insult to art and all the great art that has been produced in the course of human civilization

I just actually read all the way through this review and I loved it haha.
I looked at the rating and dismissed the review and then couldn't figure out why you were contradicting your rating Verneer. In the future I will read the full review before dismissing lol.

Any potential for legitimate discussion of this album was killed with MJs review. As much as he pretended that he carved a space for 'haters' to voice their opinion, it was a polemic through and through and any discussion after that was going to be colored by it, and MJs own stupid pontificating didn't help either.
And its sad, like, actually, honestly sad - because though all the discussion, the only thing that was not discussed was the music itself, and any and all discussion was filtered though a lens of 'its shit/no yr wrong lol/omg yr so pretentious'. As much as MJ would protest and say 'no the fanboys were always rabid', he bought into that viciousness with just as much silliness. And the impact it's had is that even if Lewis or Adam or I or anyone were to voice a honest to god reason why this album is so revered, and hell, awesome, it's no use, its just going to come off as spitting venom either way, each 'side' accusing each other of something or rather.
