His vocals have never really been the focus from what I've heard. I love the riffs too but his vocals really fit the concept on IA and SW should really be proud of songs like Lips Of Ashes, .3, and Heartattack In A Layby.

.3 is something i think they'll never try to do again. shame because it's a goddamn masterpiece
|

yeah his vocals are fine, it just seems that SW decided to move towards metal purely because of Opeth.

Like I said, they really should be proud of that song. Like goddamn, what a fuckin mind blowing piece
of music. The dark bass contrasting the inspiring strings work surprisingly well.
Opeth actually was a reason he moved in that direction I believe. Not a bad thing though I love when
bands experiment with their sounds.

One of the best on IA for sure

Same, but i'd rather the experimentation come naturally and not just because of another band.

I feel like it kinda did come naturally though. It sounds a little more prog metaly yet it still sounds like PT to me. Great band to be influenced by anyway.

it's a goddamn masterpiece [2]
The move to metal seems very very natural to me, and Mikael took inspiration from SW so I guess he returned the favour. SW was a metalhead during his younger days but thought modern extreme metal had lost its charm until he heard a few bands including Opeth and Meshuggah (ugh).
So he was inspired to write more metal oriented songs, and it works out really well, especially since his tones are damn near flawless and he mixes the aggression with the soft side beautifully.
There's a little history lesson for ya

And I love SW's vocals, and have since I first heard them
|
| |
Yeah theres nothing to dislike about his voice.
Anyway I might take a break from PT for a bit and then come back to them hoping the newer stuff starts to sound fresh again.

He's a good vocalist. I've always found his voice kinda soothing

His skill in vocal arrangements is better, the harmonies and layers on this album and Stupid Dream are unreal

Yea lyrically he can be quite bad, but his harmonies are always incredible. In most cases I enjoy his lyrics. Some of his worst lyrics are on The Incident imo
