Spot-on review. 95% of the sentiments I share. Kudos to the author.
I'll add this: John Petrucci still has yet to deliver a solo worthy of holy praise. The last real good one was in Hell's Kitchen. Scenes onwards the solos have been nothing more than technical wankery. Don't get me wrong, I still love the technical wankery but as proven in his solo album, Suspended Animation, John still has it what takes to deliver heartfelt solos. Just wish it could be in the next DT album.

Eh, I've never been able to get into Dream Theater much. Mostly because of Portnoy, it just seems like he (and the rest of the band) substitute technicality for musicality. I can't stand pretentious music, Tourniquet is a good example of the opposite. Ted Kirkpatrick is one of the best drummers ever, yet he makes music that is fun to listen to. Anyway, my rant is complete.

I enjoyed this album until 10:22 in the first track, WTF IS THAT. I stopped liking the album after that moment.

not a big fan. doubt ill ever bother checking this out.
portnoy's great though

Great yes, but most of his talent is reserved for so called "wanking", which is best used for instrumentals that showcase such things. Who cares what time signature a song is in, if it adds little to nothing to a song. Most of his beats come off as robotic and stiff.

I thought id like the Instrumental tracks more tbh. Ive always thought that DT would be better without LaBrie, but this album.... It doesnt really suit without him really. I keep waiting for the vocals to come in - otherwise its kinda repetitive at times.

LaBrie has his moments. It's a shame he doesn't have enough of them.
