I agree. Too bad the rest of the album doesn't even come close.

The more I listen to this, the more off-course I find them to be going. Some of the meanderings into prog world are completely pointless and out of place in many areas. But damn, when they find a good groove, they do it damn well.

^ehhh, I'm getting this possibly tomorrow, and I can really picture Mastodon handling prog incredibly well. Their previous albums have always been hinting at it, and to go all the way with a more proggy then metal sound suits them well I think. This Message Edited On 03.27.09

Every solo on this album is amazing. Hail Satan!

The vocals aren't that bad...
Ideally, I would have preferred SOME guttural vocals like Mastodon is known for, but I can't fault them for trying, considering some of my favorite Mastodon vocal songs in the past features clean vox. (Colony of Birchman, Naked Burn.)
Considering the amout of experimentation they did this album, I thought every track sounded pretty good. It was also nice to see them write lyrics about something meaningful for a change.

Anything can happen with these guys. Their next album could be more like REMISSION. who knows?
As for this one i ain't heard it yet. i've been looking for reviews for like a month to quench my thirst and so far it's the only negative review i've read. Mastodon can't suck. Although i've never been the biggest fan of mastodon's vox. they should really consider adding a vocallist.
All in all i think it's another ass kickin' album.

^ seconded, can't see Mastodon reverting back to Remission days.

Great review, I'm unsure if I'll check this out, I was down with Leviathan, Blood Mountain was only ok, I doubt i'll find anything too intriguing about Crack the Skye

I never got the "purposefully bad Kerry King shred imitation" impression from the Divinations solo at all, it's much more melodic than that. Kerry King's solos sound like off key mixtures of swarms of mentally impaired insects and table saws to me.

Lol at the idea of Mastadon being known for their guttural vocals.

Haha yeah I'd hardly call them guttural.

You know what I mean. The typical vocals found on the rest of their albums. As for your spelling, phoenetically yours makes more sense. This Message Edited On 03.29.09

It's great! It's not meant to be fun, it's not a Eagles of Death Metal album you know!
