good, personal review. i think avey's lyrics don't get enough attention

btw lion in a coma isn't the best track, esp not ever.

some reviewer made a bunch of comparisons to pet sounds or something. hopefully this is considered something like that of our generation

Unless someone else did that and I'm not aware then that was probably me.

I never noticed the Pet Sounds/Person Pitch thing either.

I'm not finding this as immediately accessible as everybody else seems to be, but I am warming to it after listening to it loads over the past few days.

One of my main issues with it is I'm finding it difficult to connect with it personally. I find it doesn't really evoke much from me emotionally, especially when compared with Feels. The pureed pop style may sound wonderful and contain some fantastic hooks, inducing smiles and singalongs, but the record as a whole always just seems to fall short of something essential to make it worthy of a classic. It seems like they concentrated too much on the songwriting and forgot to add the heart that is so evident on anything pre-SJ. The character is there, but the spirit is missing. I mean, the lyrics scream it, but the music doesn't follow suit. It feels almost sterile, and I'm not completely sure how they've sterilized it.

The band said themselves that this is deserving of an amazing outdoor listening experience, and I can agree with that. But I'm not sure if it will ever get to me more than that. I'm aware of how weak this argument is, but this is because I feel that something cardinal to AC has been taken away and I'm not exactly sure how. I would say this is too soon to be saying things like this, as these things usually require time, but this has been given a classic rating already so.This Message Edited On 01.08.09

i disagree with you that this has less heart matt; it's obviously got a different kind of vibe but it's not lacking some form of emotion. i do agree with you that it lacks something that feels had for me though, or at least whenever i listen to this i end up playing feels along with it.

I agree with you. Something has been replaced. It's just a shame that they felt they had to compromise instead of trying to make the two work together, which they could have done.

I think what I meant to say before was not that there was no emotion present, but more that the trademark AC passion and heart has been sacrificed/pushed back to a frustrating (but not complete) extent for the sake of this 'richer sound'.

And because they can't seem to combine the both, I'd rather have the passion of Feels over the luxurious sound of MPP.This Message Edited On 01.08.09

Maybe it is there and it's just taking me longer to find than the rest of you. Time will tell. I just always find myself wanting to listen to Feels whenever I put this on. Just seems more genuine, musically. It doesn't concentrate on attaining and perfecting a certain sound, but rather concentrates on being able to emit and evoke a certain emotion. At least moreso than MPP anyway, imo. I'll reiterate my belief that the lyricism on this album really is phenomenal, and there is certainly a lot of passion there.

And I haven't really got an issue with the vocals either. I'm not a fan of Avey's screams tbph. This Message Edited On 01.08.09

I think the emotional appeal...
their lyrics always have the real connection for me..

but where this album really shines (imo) is the new/awesome harmonies

AM I REALLY ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE OUTSIDE OF ME???!!!

awesome

feels is definitely more outwardly emotional, more than any of their lps i think, mostly because its their "love song" album and it really shows. but the emotion is here too, more subtle but there

I really don't look to Animal Collective for emotional music at all. That seems to be pretty well covered by many other bands/genres.This Message Edited On 01.08.09
