If you look up live vids from the 80s, it absolutely sounds better live. The guitars and bass are properly in your face. A lot of pro producers didn’t know how to mix heavy music back then. Made the mistake of mixing it like a regular rock band and trying to dial the guitars back and so on.

It could be even HELLER if the amps were cranked and the guitars were just louder. Never settle kids.

the tone sounds wimpy and light by modern standards. even the shitty scooped mids thing pantera did sounded more "heavy"

i can't seriously be the only one. it's hard to go back and listen to these old tapes because they sound so muted compared to what comes out these days in the genre. like fkin compare this to Jesus Piece or something and you'll see what I mean.

"ok ok i get it, u like production more than u like music"
production directly affects the way music SOUNDS, completely strip it away and the elements you're supposed to be focusing on become harder to discern. there's a charm to rawer production but the tech back then just really made this shit sound so muted.

sounds great to me, this album is aces dawg, takes a little more effort on listener to dig into all the dynamics. im not lazy from being spoonfed my preference. these are great songs and aged well.
