Panic Attack is much better live than here.

It's more the songs lenght that scare the shit out of me. I'm picturing endless solos and technical masturbation.

It's their worst culprit of that (har har). Some of it sounds almost neoclassical at times to me but it doesn't work for their sound. Prophets of War is probably actually my favorite song on the album.

If you listen to each track in headphones there is a reference to the song octivarium in one way or another at some point within the songs. its pretty fun to try and pick out each peice bit by bit.

It's actually the other way around unless you're referencing something completely different.

indeed, but Im not talking about song clips like in the song Octivarium, im talking about throughout the album itself in each song, there is a piece of music played by whomever that is also in the song octivarium. the easiest example i can give is the very ending of the root of all evil on the piano is the same as the medicate me melody. and similar subtle things like that show up everywhere.

Man, octavarium (song) is so fucking epic I've probably listened to it 10 times in the past few days

as the album that got me into Dream Theater.. (and then into Prog. bands like opeth/porcupine tree) this simply has to get a 4.5.
Panic Attack is so awesome. Ocavarium is stunning and the root of all evil is pretty good too. the others don't stand out imo, but are still good.
Also, imo, one of la brie's best sounding records. he sounds great.

I've always had a soft spot for These Walls, being the first Dream Theater song I've ever heard. The only other songs I care about are The Root of All Evil and the title track obviously. Can't find myself to bring this below a 4 though.
