''This is one of those weird occurrences where youβre absolutely sure Trif will love something, yet he doesnβt. Strange guy.''
Haha, I take that as a compliment πͺ
''this feels a bit oppressive for trifcore tbh''
You know what, this could very well be it. I was also sure I was going to like this, yet I didn't.
Re-evaluation of Lamb - Lamb is planned for today! Stay tuned and find out what will happen.

I know why this doesn't really work for me. It's because of two things: π©βπ€π and π₯π
Thing 1. Don't really like Lou. She chooses to always sing in that register just leaning into dissonance/just being slightly towards the edge. This would be fine for a few minutes, but why would you constantly do it? All the time. To me that gets boring after a while. Some salt makes a dish, but only eating salt isn't nice at all.
Thing 2. The blend of drum and bass with trip hop isn't really my thing. Love both styles individually, but mixed together they cancel each other out. To me, drum and bass is nicely hype-y, trip hop is nicely soothing/slow dark and brooding. When you mix them, both effects get lost. The lower speed tracks here work so much better than the faster/really diversely percussive ones.
Could you tell I was bored at home/work today?

Interesting explanation, maybe I understand you a little more now Trif. For me the blend works pretty seamlessly, but then I don't mind it when trip-hop ups the pace a little. This is still pretty chill for the most part, the odd tempo injection doesn't detract from the experience because both aspects are very well implemented and the variety is welcome.
Lou's vox compliment the music by treading that fine line between willful engagement and wandering detachment, which aids in facilitating a 'blurring of consciousness' effect which I find quite desirable when in the right head-space.

"She chooses to always sing in that register just leaning into dissonance/just being slightly towards the edge. "
I have no idea how she comes across overwhelmingly dissonant to you tbh. This reminds me of when ars said agent 5.1's singer was "raspy". I feel a pretty puzzling disconnect.
"To me, drum and bass is nicely hype-y, trip hop is nicely soothing/slow dark and brooding. "
Old school breaks like this have always been "dark and brooding". Drum and bass is a pretty massive umbrella genre, it's never just been one note. Not to mention breaks have been an integral part of trip hop and all the brilliant adjacent sub genres in that pool since the beginning. Such a critical essence. These genres share so many roots and go completely hand in hand.
Theres really no tempo discrepancy either, it just depends how you count. It's no coincidence that the usual tempo constraints of breaks neatly double those of trip hops. You can count most breaks at the same bpm as a lot of downtempo shit, it really makes no difference.

Iβm imagining Trif reading my plebeian-yet-understanding take and experiencing a feeling of reassuring serenity...
Then he reads yours and feels like a right plonker.

Well Pots all of that can be true but I do not experience this record in that way. πΏπ³π³β
, πΏββ
Sure, both genres have a lot in common, for instance their reliance on breakbeat (which I totally adore can't get enough of it you know this your hip hop list is still on daily rotation omg π΅); that doesn't mean I have to enjoy them when put together like this. Apparently they find a way to make me not enjoy it.
Sad but true! πβ
Also your heart is not tender π

Same goes for more typical drum and bass and hip hop. You'll find hip hop interludes on a lot of d&b albums. More mainstream d&b is usually very concise about tempo because mixing is such a pivotal part of the scene. Hip hop is the easiest, most natural style to deviate to for mixing and consistency purposes because the bpm can often be halved very exactly. Its seamless.

Lol of course you dont have to like it, but I'll still defend it to my grave

That is, as we say in Dutch, je goed recht (~your basic right). Especially when you see this as ''top 5 trip hop aot material''!

To be honest, I might prefer this to those more common ones too (perhaps minus DJ Shadow)... can you imagine my rating for them, yikes!
I never knew this but apparently I'm very picky when trip hop is concerned. It could have to do with the genre being slapped on so many records/artists, who knows.
For me, the hip-hoppier/jazzier, the better. And vocalists matter of course. Or soul-influences. And the darker or smokier atmosphere. It's an amalgamation of those factors. Alchemy.
