Saw him live when he promoted this, prancing round in a top hat. He was shit. I heckled.

I remember when the opening track was a fairly popular radio single, at least where I lived.
Prob the weirdest song on the radio at the time.

"I saw SOAD live and they all really sucked. It's what killed my love for Serj and SOAD, seeing them totally butcher it live. "
Yah same here. Wouldn't say 'killed my love for SOAD' but they are indeed awful live nowadays. Serj just seemed so tired and uninterested the entire time and he used that damn nasally Kermit The Frog voice thru the whole show.

I still think this is excellent, the songs may be simple, but it's very very well executed. The piano adds a lot too

Damn I don't know why I had such an amazing time listening to this today. Likely in part due to having a really good EQ on my headphones but also I haven't been able to listen to much music lately, but even still this wasn't an album that ever grew on me much. I think I've also gotten past some of the bad memories I associated with the album and started fresh again.
I do wonder if the album was secretly remastered or a higher quality version was uploaded on Spotify. Probably not but it just sounds really good to me right now.

This makes me wonders whether or not the good melodies in SOAD actually came from Serj

Well kalkwiese, it’s clear to me from daron and serjs side ventures that Serj was the defining factor in the songwriting from soad. I have put a lot of thought into this and here is my disposition (I’m so over work today):
- Daron started to take the songwriting reigns a bit more in the 4th and 5th albums. Evidence: more vocal involvement from daron, stylistic change to the music favoring more guitar driven songs, drop off in quality (points toward darons songwriting as will be described later), the band ended up breaking up after the albums due to ego issues inferably from daron and power struggles. This last point makes sense with daron taking more part in songwriting and the quality dropping.
-serjs solo venture is indisputably better and has had much better reception than darons. The songwriting and themes on this debut are much more reminiscent of soads first 3 albums than anything daron has put out on his own
-the new 2020 songs, while for a good cause, are completely rudimentary from a songwriting standpoint. Genocidal humanoids sounds like a b track from hypnotize and mezmerize. And they have stated that these were written almost entirely by daron
Having Saadi that, daron is probably my favorite guitarist of all time, so not take anything away from him in that regard. But as far as songwriting and coming up with melodies, I think it’s clear Serj held the torch here
