Damn I really like Album of the Year but I wouldn't put it even close to the level of this, AD or TRT
It's just so inconsistent

Disagree, I've come to love every track (:

I haven't listened to it nearly as much as their other Patton albums so this is just an early opinion but Helpless and Paths of Glory bore the hell out of me
The Patton-penned tracks are pretty weak too with the exception of Got That Feeling

Songs like Helpless and Paths of Glory are way more about the atmosphere they conjure imo, and coincidentally those are two of my favourite FNM songs

Yeah I probably need to give them time to grow on me, fair enough

I live in North America, so I doubt I'll ever get to see FNM : (
RV sucks?! no
Dude! Why ISN'T Absolue Zero on this album?
Also, not saying I'm not a fan of Last To Know (favourite Spruance solo) just saying its not as good as the other songs.

I hate RV it's fuckin stupid as
But yeah Absolute Zero should be here

Absolute Zero is cool, it deserves to be on the album. Only thing I don't like about it is the high reverb level they put on Pattons voice.

Btw, Album of the Year is fantastic, not a 5/5 but definitely a 4/5 for me...

Album Rating: 3.0
If I could rationally give this album a 1.0 I would. But I can't simply because the songs on the album are actually generally quite good. It's just that it's so far out of left field from The Real Thing, Angel Dust and even the followup to this album that to me it's the most "experimental for the sake of not sounding accessible at all" and comes off ultra pretentious. Angel Dust is their best album by far, and if not for the annoyingly nasal vocal parts of Patton on The Real Thing, it would be a two way tie.
This album at times is like Strapping Young Lad at their most annoying. Yet I can't deny the basslines (guitar has been nothing since Martin left) or Mike's vocals when he actually sings though.
Biggest problem with this album for me is the inconsistency. There's some absolute gems here, but then there's also a bunch of songs that have great parts, but aren't even something I'd want to listen to all the way through due to the obnoxious bits.

depends on your definition of obnoxious, it sounds like you have prretty conservative taste

I wouldn't say that I'm that conservative at all. Grew up on 70s and 80s rock and metal, ended up listening to bay area thrash bands as well as Iron Maiden in the late 80s, grunge and whatever traditional or thrash bands came out in the 90s, got really into Opeth and Nevermore in the late 90s, started learning to tolerate more bands with black or death vocals (even if they were not my preference) and from the early 2000s onward it's been a pretty wide variety of genres. What I don't like, nor ever will however is when someone just starts screeching into the mic and calls it "art", which FNM do on a couple of songs.
It's basically the aspects of Fantomas (that I do not like at all) which were incorporated. I also happen to like much of SYL, just not all. Some of it just goes overboard with the noise factor. My main problem with this album though is that it's not a collection of songs that adhere to any single genre, or are even remotely related. That doesn't mean I don't like the songs, but if I'm in the mood to hear a particular genre, I don't want to have to sift through an album that plays more like just a random collection of various bands from different genres. Which is exactly what this album is like, unless you want to claim that FNM is its own genre, so they can sound like whatever and still "fit" within their own genre.
