With Mortal Share and At the Gates of Sheep alone this jumps to a 3.5 immediately.

Mortal Share has been one of my fav metal songs for years. Even when I didn't like this album as a whole.

melodeath put a particular emphasis on creating notably pretty melodies, whereas like osdm and swedish dm had natural tendencies toward melodic guitarwork through tremolo riffs, but didn't highlight the melodies at all.

"i dunno about calling things melodic death metal, or tagging music as particularly melodic in terms of genre generally. isn't death metal and music generally melodic?"

you've listened to both genres mentioned right? there's a pretty obvious difference

"in what way did they not highlight the melodies"

they didn't use lead guitar lines that were filled with melodies reminiscent of Iron Maiden, which is to say, higher pitched notes that sounded pretty.

There's very obvious differences between melodeath and straight up dm I think we all know that.

I hate calling Converge metalcore tbh. It just seem inappropriate classifying them under the same subgenre that Avenged Sevenfold is in

avenged sevenfold aren't really in metalcore now tho, they just had a couple albums starting out that were metalcore right?

I don't know, everything up until Hail to the King was pretty metalcore imo, just without any screamed vocals. Really shitty metalcore at that.

I'd say the first couple albums were metalcore. Metalcore is such a broad term. It's that weird stage for punk/hardcore bands that are too metal to be punk (Shai Hulud, Converge, etc.) and then the metal bands that aren't metal enough to be metal (Devil Wears Prada, I Wrestled a Bear Once, these bands have the worst names).

it's just clear that alias hasn't listened to much death metal if he thinks there's no difference between death metal and melodic death metal
