i like how they named their album jokes.

they should change their band name to that.

then they can call this album kid crash.

much more suitable name for this band.

maybe it's just because 90% of the emo bands i like have really crummy production so i'm just used to it (see: pg. 99, Textbook Traitors, Moss Icon, Maximillian Colby, etc)

How can underproduction not be enough. new nas? production is increasingly essential. nm. this statement

the production on new nas was decent, the beats were just meak though...

Plus I enjoy albums with bad production, like Ulver's Nattens Madrigal. Production shouldn't completely shatter your love for an album.

^i feel ya. good point. maybe i should've said 'either the production's absence of role with the mood or...'

aren't you a clever one

i agree with chan, fits the music well enough, but i also agree with the review in saying better production could help some parts of this really stand outThis Message Edited On 08.26.08

Production shouldn't completely shatter your love for an album

it can do a lot when you are getting a first impression. you're assuming i was already 'in love' with this...

The reason people rave about this album is because it's amazing. End of story.

this album's production is essential. the homogenuity of it, especially in the guitar tones; only adds to the perfection and flow of the album. people love this because it's flawlessy composed and executed emo that takes the best parts of it's contemporaries and twists them into something completely new. I'm actually buying that. I'm listening to "A Conduit Rather Than a Vault" and one of the greatest aspects of those arpeggiated notes before the big heavy ending is that they almost clipped, high notes sounds sick and resonate with every other guitar sound they have. I can dig your argument.

yeah, the drumming is spectacular; but i think the highlight of the album is the guitar interplay. it amazes me that too different guys can have such similar playing styles. it really shines through as one voice. obviously in something in like "Kissed By A Roach"; and more subltely in the really quiet moments throughout tracks like "Life was real.." and "A Conduit". still, all the playing is so complementary and well thought out that the undermixed vocals really fit. vocals mixed up front would have killed the drive of the instrumental section. as for the production, i really like it on all the heavy sections. whenever alex or john starts with the real high tremelo ocatves(which is pretty much) all the time; the guitar tones completely blend together as this warm voice. you can't really distinguish either part; but it sounds incredible as muddied. most the album is down a drop D down a half step, but a couple parts sound almost Post Metal in nature. there were a couple things that irked me when i initially heard the album last year, but over time those have become some of my favorite aspects of the record. it's just so spectacular from a compositionally dynamic standpoint. the more you listen to it, the more it makes sense, and the more you can grow to love it. these four guys play off eachother so well, they actually manage to make a 9 minute song sound not only coherent, but composed. either a high 4.5 or a 5. i don't know; i love every aspect of the album. there's nothing that i dislike about it; any faults that I may have initially percieved now just sort of blend in as distinctive characteristics of the album. my favorite songs have changed over time, and every time i listen it still feels so fresh. it's a brilliant showing of musicianship and songwriting.

the only area it ever falls short is emotion. don't me wrong, the whole thing is really passionate; but i find myself more in awe of what I'm hearing than actually attached to it. it's a record i can put on anytime of the day, but it doesn't quite hit the same chord with me as some other albums.  it's certainly a unique experience; and it moves me, but not in my heart. that's really the only criticism i can draw up against it, and even then it's not really reasonable.

this is one of the only albums on Sputnik that i think really deserves the praise it gets. it's just that good. This Message Edited On 08.30.08
