This record is kind of crazy underrated. Appreciating it a lot more these days. The western meets post hc vibe is so dope

I think so too and it didn't help that it followed YCBY. I think my biggest criticism is its a little front loaded but there's so many cool ideas throughout

didn’t help too that 2006-2008 was like an awkward transition in proper streaming count and transitions
back when vevo took over existing music videos that already had millions of views

Great point. I forgot all about Vevo lol, what a relic of the past. Also a much easier time to get any album for free

That’s true, but also why it took some time to find and give flowers to those who lost momentum in the transition from word of mouth and publishings like message boards to algorithm tunnels

this is really cool. i love how unique it is. the western/country elements are well weaved in. reminds me a lot of later he is legend, especially nagaina. i really dig when there are those elements but aren't a full on southern metal/rock album. there's also some great heavy songs here like letter thing and prematurio el baby. the later is one of my favs of theirs, that explosive riff is crazy.
i also really like when they go slower, think that's what they're best at post december. really beautiful and well done builds. slow good morning and you will not be welcomed are just fantastic. jeffrey's cleans are even better, have a really cool tone to them.
mix is pretty muddled though, that's my main complaint. but really cool album. i've grown to really dig when bands try something completely new and experimental.

Awesome rating and glad you dug this one. It's always been unfairly maligned due to its ambitiousness. Revisiting it recently made me appreciate a lot more and it was kind of ahead of its time compared to the core scene of the era. Could see me bumping up my score as well as there's plenty to love here. If it had improved production and didn't follow YCBY I think it would be better received

totally see that, maybe a little overly ambitious but definitely so many good ideas. yeah the production is sadly really noticeable. so muddy. a remix of this would have it sounding like a new album and open some eyes. hope they do it sometime.

Goddamn, Letter Thing is a barnburster of a fucking opener. Love the jangly, discordant, manic tempo. Goddamn. That’s experimentation done right.
And the beginning of Breathing’s for the Birds is phenomenal so far.
I guess this album must get much worse? That or the average is bullshit.

I don't think the averages on Sput are a good representation of a lot of hardcore or core-adjacent releases in general. Maybe I'm biased cuz it's arguably my favorite genre, but standards for good music in these genres have been mostly lame in the past here. Same can be said about older hip hop opinions on this site

Goddamn. This shit is incredible. You Will not be welcomed blew me away. Was not ready for that power. Damn. Up there with Apathy is a Cold Body as one of their very best.
Prematurito El Baby (sic?) and Composer Meets Corpse (maybe best song title ever) are a hell of a one-two punch leading into You Will Not be Welcomed. Plus the aforementioned tracks in my last post.
This shit is so well sequenced man. The sounds are varied but somehow the album remains incredibly cohesive. And as mentioned somewhat— this album has some of the best song titles I’ve ever seen. Cool and unique, and while the titles seem cryptic, they somehow fit each song’s corresponding vibe like a glove.
This might even be their best yet for me. Just crushed me on first listen. It’s at least way up there with YCBY. Can’t say if it tops it yet, but it’s def in the conversation .
While that’s a decent average nonetheless, it’s hogwash in correspondence to the quality and ambitiousness on display here.

Perhaps. I’ll have to start paying more attention. But I find the averages are generally pretty acceptable. Of course there are exceptions. This and Tear from the Red are too low imo. And TOOD is a bit too high. But I didn’t grow up listening to it. I think that’s where the disparity lies for me. Only a 3.5 for me so far but I’ve listened to it the least. For me it pales in comparison to the later, more interesting and melodic material.
But honestly the exact same thing happened to me with my first underoath and brand new discog runs. They’re only chasing safety was meh, pretty good…but nothing on DtGL, LITSOS and DisAmb. But when I went back to it and spun it a few more times, I found myself REALLY fucking loving it. Think I have it at 4.5 now, started at prob 3.5.
Basically, the exact same sentence can be said for brand new regarding Deja Entendu, for me.

Regarding The Opposite of December, I don't think a lot of metalcore had indulged in as much melodic and emo influences up until then. You can find examples but they lack the execution/songwriting of the time that they pulled off so well.
As for ratings, old Sputnik had a huge anti chug agenda where releases that had an abundance of breakdowns were automatically considered bad which I think is bs. Now you have bands like Knocked Loose loved by the community here. Wish that same energy could be applied retroactively lol

No doubt man. Knocked Loose is so fucking good. Best newest band out there imo, at least for me personally.
