Review Summary: An artist stays true to himself.

Whenever I listen to an album, I try to conceive of it as a whole. The music is, of course, the beating heart. But the artwork-- that's the face. The title, the name. The tracks are the spine. And the lyrics, that's the personality. What is this whole piece of art, "Reality Awaits" by The Strokes attempting to express?

That is up to each listener to discern. But now several days in, I see an artist -- Julian Casablancas -- making a single, subversive statement across a tapestry of auto-tuned tunes: "F--- you and your expectations". There's no greater peace for an artist to feel than that. They see what they see and must express it honestly. Many don't have that luxury or confidence.

The music itself is delicious. While I'm not particularly a fan of the autotune, it's incredible how they can still capture emotions in a way I can relate to. In this way, they sound as fresh as ever to me. I teared up during "Falling out of Love." By "Liar's Remorse", I had a box of tissues next to me. After "Tyrants of the Mellow Moon", I was borderline bawling.

Isn't that what true art is supposed to do, make us feel something true? It's a hard line to straddle. To satisfy an entrenched sound-- in this case the raw groove which this band already accomplished 25 years ago. Instead, they've decided to push sonic boundaries through analog and electronic emulsification. A case study on staying human in an increasingly machine world.

You don't have love because you don't want pain
You don't want pain because you don't have trust
You don't have trust, so you don't have love
You don't have love because you just can't take the pain

Wow, first review since 2018! I would expand a bit, at least what you wrote in the soundoff also belongs in the review in my opinion. But it's nice that you go against the site's consensus, I didn't expect that someone would dare to write a positive review about this album

Thank you! I wanted to get my initial thoughts out there, as of right now I have more feeling than form. But I think any art that makes you feel something is a triumph, so I wanted to validate that sentiment in regards to this album.

I'm very wary to check this out. Heard about 20 seconds of The Fruits of Conquest on a podcast and literally cringed so hard I thought my face was having some sort of muscle spasm. Can I assume if I didn't like that I'm not going to like the rest of this?

I understand that the first listen to the album might disappoint long-time fans of the band. But it would be a mistake to stop after just one listen and dismiss it because of the use of autotune (the most common negative criticism). On this album, they try many new things, with some real successes, like "Liar’s Remorse," for example. The autotune, which is disappointing at first, actually starts to feel quite natural after two or three listens. Of course, this album isn’t the high point of The Strokes’ career, but it’s certainly not an all-time low. It’s probably when they stray the farthest from their usual style that they are most interesting on this album; it asks a little effort from old fans, but it’s worth it.

Hamilton Leithauser (from The Walkmen) just finished a tour with these guys. His latest solo album is really great, y'all should check it out.

I autotune making a comeback? That's wild. Between this and the new A7X it's like 2007 is being summoned all over again.
