Review Summary: Diminishing returns.

Enter Shikari has always been known for their fun and unique blend of high-energy electronic music juxtaposed with metal instrumentals and anthemic choruses. Since 2017’s The Spark, they’ve leaned into a softer, more polished sound, yet they’ve remained consistent at putting out high-quality music. The one thing they haven’t done much of in the last decade or so, however, is evolve. But why should they need to? After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

Their surprise new album, Lose Your Self, feels like a rehash of 2023’s A Kiss For The Whole World (which itself was a rehash of 2020’s Nothing Is True And Everything Is Possible). While the album is far from being bad, their schtick is beginning to feel a bit stale and tiresome.

To address the album’s positives first, Lose Your Self begins with an absolute bang: the opening/title track is a great big fireball of energy, featuring one of the best choruses on the whole album. Find Out The Hard Way… maintains the positive momentum from the opener with its optimistically upbeat chorus and surprisingly heavy breakdown. Lose Your Self hits its peak with The Flick Of A Switch I, which is a clear standout that leans heavy on the band’s electronic sound, somewhat akin to their 2017 track Shinrin-Yoku.

Unfortunately, following the conclusion of The Flick Of A Switch I, the album’s quality takes a noticeable dip. i can’t keep my hands clean is a completely unnecessary and repetitive entry into the album’s tracklist; perhaps it could’ve worked better as a fully fleshed out song, but as it is, it’s a waste of 90 seconds and feels out of place with the rest of the album. it’s OK starts off decently with a bass-heavy groove and semi-spoken word satirical lyrics, but is let down by its underwhelming and unimpactful chorus. The album’s closing trio of songs - Spaceship Earth I, II, & III - feel undercooked and incohesive with one another as well.

The simple truth is: if you’re already a fan of Enter Shikari, especially their more recent work, you’ll surely find something to enjoy on Lose Your Self. There’s more good than bad here, and even the weaker moments remain listenable. That being said, it’s starting to feel like the band is running on fumes creatively, and that they’re overdue for a new direction of some kind, or perhaps a full-on attempt at returning to their heavy roots. They’ve gotten away with rehashing the same style for years, but I can’t help but feel like rehashing Lose Your Self would be a very poor decision. Lose Your Self is a relatively enjoyable and fun listen, but it’s not one I expect to revisit often.

This album made me wonder how much more they have in the tank or how long can the band keep going without parodying themselves. The albums still good dont get me wrong but just wonder how much longer can they go on like this

I wonder the same thing tbh.

I still really like them as a band, but I meant it when I said that this style is getting tiring over time. Maybe it's one of those cases of "I'm changing but the band isn't." I know there are other bands from when I was younger that I grew out of liking for similar reasons.

Yeah i was feeling the same thing with growth. The bands still had a solid run of things but i cant help but feel this style has gotten tired

Nothing is True was their peak, their last effort was blindingly mediocre, this one is MARGINALLY better. I really think they need to go back to their heavier roots. The potential is there, but they keep doing this cocktease where you think they’re gonna give you what you want and suddenly it all slows down again. Album is good, but could have been great

@Hobblepot - I mostly agree about Nothing Is True, but I personally have Mindsweep ever-so-slightly higher rated. Both are wonderful albums though.

I think they already sound like a bit of a parody of themselves. The opening track is a bit cringey with the speaking parts and the songs are so formulaic without great hooks. I also don't think Rou has the voice to do these types of songs. He was great on Nothing is True but I don't like him on almost any of The Spark and thought the last album was bland too. He's at his best when the songs have some oomph to them. I do think the instrumentals here are pretty good but the songs themselves just aren't great.

Far more interesting sonically and actually quite experimental for Shikari and high is a warm welcome after kiss for the whole world.

Couple of duds but this is way more interesting, fun and deeper thematically than kiss for the whole world

it’s Ok is a fucking bop too

Only sad that they don’t commit Spaceship Earth to a single 12 minute song as it would have been much better to figure out the phases ourselves than be told in track form

All in all very happy with this! Good job lads

Glad you liked it! Can't say I agree about It's Okay, but you make a good point about the Spaceship trio. I'd imagine that would've been an epic track.

I think their standalone songs the last couple years were a drop off but still good. This is like a bit more of a drop off again and some of it is not good at all.

Now the excitement has worn off a bit...

Definitely a step up from their last album. It still doesn't reach the heights of Nothing is True, The Mindsweep, Flash Flood or even The Spark, but this does recapture some of that magic which was lost in their last release.

It's still lacking that "spark" though, for a band that used to take so many risks, this feels relatively safe by Shikari standards (I remember hearing Anaesthetist for the first time, and Rou dropping a bit of grime into the mix was such a bold move back then, but it was so hype!)

That being said, Dead in the water brings back some of them slick Mindsweep vibes. Really digging demons as well as Shipwrecked (but that's basically Satellites 2.0 so, I'm gonna love it) The Spaceship Earth suite is pretty cool although the 2nd part lets it down a little overall.

Also props to Rou for his lyricism. Easily the best since Sparky

@JoyfulPlatypus - Mindsweep is super close, but Nothing is True to me feels more definitive. It covers every sound they’ve ever attempted in one album, so for me it feels like their peak. I was hoping that everything after would be something totally new, but it’s been The Spark 2.0 and now 3.0

^I wouldn't say The Spark 2.0 and 3.0, although I do get what you're saying. This album feels more like a reflection of Enter Shikari as a whole. The synths in the opening track, the horn segments on Shipwrecked, the grand orchestral finale (which brings me back to Elegy For Extinction from Nothing is True...) I do love all that. However it does suck the originality out of this one, it doesn't really stand out as a unique addition to their discography. But maybe it's the band saying goodbye to an era, as they welcome "change" for a new one (if the closing segment of the album is anything to go by)

Changing my mind on this quickly. Might be a 4
