well since no one wanted to do up a review for a nightmare of you, i decided to get up and do one on my own. Having owned this album for almost a month, i must say that i am quite impressed with the band in general. I wont be providing background info on the band because i believe that the website has already done a good job of that.
Okay, so to cut to the chase, lets get on to this album review.
I'll be doing the album review on a song to song basis. So lets get going!
1) The Days Go By Oh So Slow Rating: 3/5
This is a fairly likeable starter track for the album , however it doesnt really do the justice to the stuff this band is actually capable of. It's pretty much cotton candy feel-good song from this album.
2) Dear Scene, I Wish I Was Deaf Rating 5/5
This is the truly wonderful stuff by nightmare of you. The clean guitar melodies and simple drum patterns blend in with superb vocals making this one of the highlights of the album. The song is catchy and soon enough it'll have you tapping your feet along to the melody.
3) Thumbelina Rating: 4/5
This follows a similair formula to the song prior to that. The only difference probably is that things have been slowed down quite a bit. I would so the material for this song makes it interesting. Its talking about the life of an incredibly hot prostitute by the name of Thumbelina. I kinda got hooked on this one for quite a while, probably because of the songs 'devil may care' attitude.
4) My Name Is Trouble Rating: 3/5
Okay, this one is quite unique. It probably intends to showcase the variety that nightmare of you is capable of. I dont think it would be fitting to label them as just some other alternative band. This one is kinda like a song taken from The Bravery, especially with the key part the keyboards play in this song. Again, sex is used as its main material, however this song slowly dies out after a fantastically refreshing introduction.
5) Why Am I Always Right? Rating: 2.5/5
Probably one of the songs im really not in favour of. The song is relatively forgettable and i guess im guilty of skipping this track most of the time. Its not that the song is bad, its just that it doesnt have much holding power when compared to other songs on this album. The strumming pattern on this one sounds a bit repettitive, probably what killed my interest in the song in the first place.
6) I Want to Be Buried in Your Backyard Rating: 3.5/5
I kinda like the feel of the song, probably because of how that bass line rings in my head. Its really quite enjoyable, although not fantastically groundbreaking in my eyes, the song is quite feel-good. Probably for those days when you couldnt care less about whats playing on your iPod.
7) Ode to Serotonin Rating: 3.5/5
Im not quite sure what to make of this song. Except maybe that the sexual references made may lose their novelty especially when its being used too often. Fairly likeable, although i dont know why this song reminds me of green day churning out some pointlessly happy song. (i.e. poprocks and coke)
8) Marry Me Rating: 4/5
Variety, variety, variety! This one sounds like it was taken out from some oldschool country album. The see-saw feel of this song makes it quite enjoyable. I'd say this is good for those days when u just want to feel good and not have a care in the world. Again, how effortlessly this band showcases their ability in many different genres amazes me. Overall a good song.
9) In the Bathroom Is Where I Want You Rating: 4/5
This one is what track no. 5 could have been had they tried harder. However this one lacks depth, i almost feel as though the singer was just making up the words as he went along. The chorus, despite once again, being quite sexed up is truly what makes this song one worthy of listening.
10) The Studded Cinctures Rating: 3/5
Another rather pointless track in my opinion. It looks as though they badly wanted 11 songs in the album, and this one just made the cut. It really isn't that god awful, but after the first chorus, you end up losing most interest in the song altogether.
11) Heaven Runs On Oil Rating: 2/5
My least favourite song on the album, the intro was probably what killed the song. The later parts of the song arent half that bad, (if you last that long.) the intro just really weirded me out and was too much of a turn off for me. But if you don't let first opinions ruin it for you, you guys will be rewarded by a good song. Its a good way to end the album with the song, for some weird reason.
To sum it all up,
NIGHTMARE OF YOU
The Good
- catchy songs, fantastic melodies.
- interesting song material, they dont just talk about love. they go straight to the sex. =)
- variety and ability of the band. they are capable of pulling off many different genres without sounding too unoriginal.
The Bad
- most of the songs sorely lack a true meaning, not that this is a must, but it wouldve been a big plus. Or maybe theyre just to abstract for me.
- a few songs that are quite bland and forgettable in nature. One too many "skippable tracks" for my liking.
- songs with short attention spans. They start of well, and then things end up being a blur. quite sad actually.
Conclusion
- worth the listen, worth the 4/5 rating, especially if youre tired of listening to bands with a flat and pointless 2d personality.
