Review Summary: Not "old school", but still good as it is.
The goal for Korn was to go back to the good old days and find the music they used to write. Most of their stuff on thief first CD was about Jonathan Davis getting bullied as a child through out high school. Some of it was about drug use. Heck, some of the stuff was about getting molested. On the second CD, they wrote songs about sex, drugs, killing, and again about being bullied. When I heard that this album was going "old school", I got excited. I started listening to the their self titled album over and over. Now the question is did they make it old school? No. Not in my opinion. I thought it something different. It's like they have forgotten the past. Does this make it a bad CD? No! Not at all. I still enjoyed it.
Why wasn't this CD a success to their goal? First off, the lyrics were nothing and seemed like they meant nothing. Most of the songs are about pleasing people. That was about it. It sounded like the lyrics were forced out of his mouth. It wasn't from his heart is was from his mind. Second, they did not have the second guitar part. It wasn't like old Korn because they aren't the same without Head's writing. The guitar wasn't even close to as good as the first album. Third, there was no scatting lyrics or bag pipes. Isn't that what made Korn really good to begin with. It's what made their sound. They made a heavy rhythm with the scatting lyrics. Listen to Ball Tongue. That song was good in my opinion. Fourth, the bass rhythms were nothing like the hip hop rhythms on the first CD. The bass was non-existent. Listen to the song Daddy. You could hear the bass nice and clear. The song was fricken awesome. Those are four reasons why this album wasn't old school Korn.
This CD wasn't bad because it still was some-what heavy and fast paced. The choruses are catchy and the drums are really good. Pop A Pill sounded like a song off of TALITM along with Oildale, fear is a place to live, and lead the parade. While "the past" and "are you ready to live?" sound like songs off Issues. They didn't do too bad to getting a glimpse of the early 2000's and late 90's.
This CD isn't old school, but I will still listen to it alot because I like the songs they made. This CD is still good.
