Review Summary: Blessthefall conquer our ears in style. Beautifully recorded and written. These guys are set for something big.
Blessthefall - His Last Walk.
The band have really outdone themselves on this album. They are the type of band that really stand out in the Metalcore genre, and no, not because they are louder than most others. They never seem to get boring on this record and that is probably down to the fact that they vary the music quite a bit with every song.
A very good point with this album is that the drums are beautifully recorded and are so precise it's enthralling.
I do however feel they could've done something more with the bass on this album.
Craig Mabbits vocals are something that pull this band away from everything else. He has an extremely versatile voice and you can make out from the vast differences between Guys Like You Make Us Look Bad and With Eyes Wide Shut that his voice would fit nearly any style of music.
Meanwhile, the guitarists do a pretty good job with this. They've written their pieces amazingly and use them very well at just the right times, although a downside is that you may sometimes feel you heard the same part in another song on this record.
Now I think it's time to talk about the individual songs...
1. A Message To The Unknown
Being the first song on the album, it just has to stand out. They knew that. They did that. Kicks it straight off with a few lines of screaming before Craig lets his heart do the singing. The songs breakdown works wonderfully and just keeps you wanting more with each bar of music. The song itself is focused around love or lust at first sight. 3.5/5
2. Guys Like You Make Us Look Bad
A highlight on this album no doubt. The drums and guitars are so tight at the start and all the way through that it makes it such a catchy song (Something which is hard to come by in Metalcore). The screaming is at all the right times with this one and they really out-do themselves with their lyrics on this one. You can really tell the band have put their all into this one. 5/5
3. Higinia
A song with not too many words. Alot of repeated lines but it's a song in tribute to Craigs grandmother who went by the name Higinia. Not anything really spectacular music-wise but it's the feeling that makes this song what it is. 2.5/5
4. Could Tell A Love
Not too bad, pretty catchy. Nice vocals on this one. The breakdown is very different from anything else on this album. Although not much else to say on this song. 3.5/5
5. Rise Up
From the start this is an amazing peice of music. The words are good, the guitars are superb and vocals are fantastic. The drummings pretty damn good too. This is another highlight on this album I believe. Very well written and well performed. 4.5/5
6. Times Like These
The guitars make this sound like such a dramatic peice from the word go. Which is exactly what it is. Amazing drumming and guitars for this one, only downside is that Craigs voice seems to drone a bit in the breakdown, although the flawless drums in that part seem to make up for it. 3.5/5
7. Pray
The first time they've used an acoustic guitar on this record so far. The music in this song is pretty good and they just prove to us that they can do so much and stretch their abilities as a band. Even when this song gets heavier, the guitars are absolutely spot on with their melodies and just make this such a stand-out song on the record. Excellent. 5/5
8. With Eyes Wide Shut
With this song, some fans believed it let them down. I don't. I think this is a beautiful peice of music and deserves so much credit. The lyrics may be a tiny bit cheesy but never have I heard a band that say "I love you" and really sound like they mean it. The electric guitars in the background just fit in with the piano so well. The slow dramatic drums go well also. They do this so well and prove that metal bands can wear their hearts on their sleeves without being described as "Emo". Pretty short but it serves its purpose trememdously. 5/5
9. Wait For Tomorrow
This is yet another track which shows us their strenghs. While remaining softer at the beginning, they still manage to incorprate their metal style into this. Craigs voice is yet again up for the job and the screams always come at just the right times. 4/5
10. Black Rose Dying
Yes, at the start of this I was expecting another slower song but nope, they've suprised us yet again. Expect to hear Metalcore at it's sweetest here. 4/5
11. His Last Walk
With a song so in-your-face they bring this album to an end perfectly. They let the sound die out, in my opinion, a sign that they still have so much more to show us and so much more energy to put into our ears. 3.5/5
So there we go. My first album review aswell. Hopefully we'll be seeing alot more of Blessthefall as time goes by.
Such an amazing album by an incredible band.
