PRIMUS comes out rockin in this 1991 release from Interscope Records.
PRIMUS IS:
LES CLAYPOOL--Electric Bass, string bass, Six string fretless bass, clarinet and vocals
Larry LaLonde--Electric Guitars, six string banjo
Tim "Herb" Alexander--Drums, water jug.
I don't know much about the band, but I do know that this cd is great. I prefer Tales from the Punchbowl though.
A Track by track is hard to do for this album because it's all very similar, so instead I'll do notable tracks.
~TRACKS~
1. Seas of cheese--
The Intro. 40 seconds long. sets the pace up nicely for the album. Only notable because of it's pace-setting for the CD.
2. Here Come the Bastards--
this songs has a very strange beat to it, driven by Claypool on his bass. A cool song, although very repetitive. at parts he sounds like he's gonna start singing "I've got a Lovley bunch of Coconuts"
Also very short.
3/5
3. Sgt Baker--
Sgt. Baker--
this song comes in with 4:13 of rockin out! driven with bass, and claypool's voice keeps changing tones. it's pretty cool. Herb's drumming is excellent through the album, and this song in particular. it's drawn out, and crazy. entertaining though.
3/5
4. American Life--
Claypool's vocals are great once again, and the bass-work is awesome. this song runs 4:31, it's becoming a trend so far that song are getting drawn out and repetive in lyrics and music, but it's entertaining so I guess we shouldn't complain.
3.5/5
5. Jerry was a racecar Driver--
one of the top songs on the cd, it's short, but still amazing. runs 3:11. it's probably one of the most recognizable Primus songs. Has an excellent bassline, and a great theme for the song.
5/5
6. Eleven--
'tis an interesting song, lyrics suggest to be about not liking society, or not fitting in. another bit of drugged up goodness.
3/5
7. Is it Luck?--
this song would be good if it wasn't so friggin repetitive. the music is good, but the lyrics aren't, they make this song more annoying than anything. good music make up for it
2.5/5
8. Grandad's Little Ditty--
the most immature lyrics ever:
Quote:
|
As I stand in the Shower, Singing Opera and such, Pondering the possibility that I, Pull the pud too much, There's a scent that fills the air, Is it flatus? Just a touch. And it makes me think of you.

not bad, not good.
3/5
9. Tommy the Cat--
Tom Waits supplies the voice for "Tommy" in this cute little song about a cat (obviously) recalling some things that happened to him. "I remember it as if it were a meal ago" he says. Les sets up that "Tommy" is gonna tell a story. Waits talks very fast so it's hard to make out what he's saying, but its good all the same.
4.5/5
10. Sathington Waltz--
instrumental, pretty cool. can't elaborate as I'm not listening to it right now and I'm going by memory.
4/5
11. Those ****ed Blue-Collar Tweekers--
another cool song, makes up for the previous bad ones, cool music again, drugged up as usual!
3.75/5
12. Fish On--
Fisherman's Chronicles, Chapter II
Pretty cool lyrics, a nice beat. overall another great song, I don't know why I left this out of my initial review.....maybe casue I was lazy, maybe cause I wasn't paying attention, maybe cause I had otehr things on my mind, but this is a good song!!
4.5/5
13. Los Bastardos--
this is more of an outro than anything else.
There are some great moments on the CD, the album is definatley not dull at any time, Primus is a very talented group, and this CD cements that.
This Album is not their best, but I enjoyed it. musicianship is awesome, and the songs are just plain drugged up.
3/5
