Review Summary: The album that is the foundation of swancore stands the test of time.

It was 2007 when I heard "And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman" on myspace. I was a 17 year old, rifling through the music pages, desperate for something new. I was hooked by Jonny Craig's soaring belting and soothing croons. It wasn't like anything I had heard at that time. Sure, there was The Fall Of Troy with Thomas Erak erratic guitar playing, Circa Survive who had a front man talented in his own right, and The Mars Volta, with all their ambience. But nothing hit my harder than my first taste of Downtown Battle Mountain.

It just sounds like a bad combination between circa survive and fear before's first CD. Just another generic metalcore band. Sure the guy can sing but they're making some of the most generic music ever.

IMO I listen to Circa Survive and Fear Before and they don't remind me of either of them, and There not very metalcore to me, there post-hardcore, idk we can all have our own opinion man

This band sounds pretty good. Worth a buy for me. But they still sound like countless other metalcore bands. obviously, if you listen to it enough you will be able to distinguish it from other bands. But come now, you can't say that this band is a hardcore classic.

yeah i cant see how anyone could say this generic sounding at all. i've never heard any other band that i thought sounded anything like dance gavin dance. i can understand if you think the music is boring or bland, whatever. personally i think its incredibly well written and inventive. my only complaint is that the scream sometimes wears on my nerves. but as far as sound goes i dont see how you could classify this as metalcore, generally you have metal riffs mixed with hardcore vocals and breakdowns to be considered metalcore and i dont think that classification is warranted, especially not generic metalcore

...what are you on? DGD isn't metalcore... at all. If you don't like them, that's fine; but learn your genres before you try to talk down to others about them.

Aside from the sung vocals, everything from the screaming to the music itself takes more than its fair share of influence from Fordirelifesake's "Dance.Pretend.Forget.Defend" (http://myspace.com/fordirelifesake). Still, seeing as how the aforementioned band hasnt released new material since then - going on 4 years now - any fans of that album might want to check this album out, it's a pretty decent take on their sound.

It has its moments but way over hyped on this review. The clean vocals sometimes get on my nerves too, but its interestingThis Message Edited On 10.10.07

I like these guys but they are pretty generic

eliminate all smiley faces from this review and try to sound less like a fanboy and you would have a pretty good first review

I personally don't think DGD is generic at all. I mean honestly, can you name a band in this genre (NOT metalcore!) that sound purely original these days? Give this album a break. It's an awesome LP with solid vocals and musicianship. Not to mention these guys put on a great show!

I think the reviewer got "Screaming" and "Yelling" a little confused. This album has, if I remember correctly, all yelling and no screaming at all. Still I like it.

Very biased review. Seemed like a Jonny Craig fanboy wrote it. It served it's purpose though.

I like this album more now cause it's a known fact Johnny recorded all vocals facked outa his mind.

They are nothing more but decent and will probably fade away thanks to them losing what set them apart.

He also had sex with underage girls, oh man how they will miss johnny.
