Review Summary: Hell Yeah Bound

War metal is one of those extreme metal genres that’s inherently a bit self-limiting. Aspiring musicians can decide whether they want to be a Blasphemy doppelganger, follow the groovy cloven footsteps of bands like Archgoat, or dissipate into the caustic fumes of grind or noise. Some bands like Antichrist Siege Machine choose to throw all those corrosive influences in a giant demonic Vitamix and see what pours out afterwards. If you’re familiar with this Virginia duo’s gloriously hellish slurry, then there aren't really many surprises to be found on their latest demo, but it’s just done so damn well.

At its heart, this demo is still very much an ASM release, but with the groove dialed up. The duo has always had a penchant for leaning into the grind influences of war metal, and that’s still true here. But this outing is noticeably riffier. Just check out the intro to “Cyclic Dehumanization” or the latter half of “Storm Chariot” for some perfect examples, or the excellent cover of Pentagram’s “Live Free and Burn” that bookends the snappy quarter-hour demo.

While the grind and classic war metal elements are still heavily featured on the middle three tracks – “Sacral Violence,” “Apocalyptic Despair” and their classic track “Conqueror Shadow” – the bolstering of the band’s death metal elements makes for a neck-snappingly groovy little foray. The production on this demo leans that direction too. Eschewing the brick wall production found on their last full length, ASM sounds downright cavernous and pummeling here. The riffs and leads are reasonably easy to pick out when they’re meant to be, and the chaotic passages sound dense and menacing. Also, I have to note that the toms are mic’d HOT, which makes for punchy wakeup calls scattered throughout the demo.

I really hope that ASM continues to pursue this line of songwriting on a future release, and I hope that record is coming soon. If the band’s history is any indicator, then there’s a good chance that a new album will be forthcoming either this year or next. With a demo this strong, I’m predicting good things. So if you want a peek into the future of war metal, give this a listen.

"Sacral Violence" is so damn nasty. Lemme know what you think peeps.

Also kinda surprised they hadn't gotten a review yet. ASM goes hard!

I know they don't get a ton of love here but they're definitely worth checking out. One of the best modern war metal bands imo

I definitely dig the raw sound on this to an extent. It sounds like they're performing everything live but then I'm trying to do the mental math of how that would work without a live bass. Considering how low everything is tuned, there probably isn't a bass at all in the mix. Drums sound massive especially the toms like you said. It's so exhausting to listen to, though. Could feel my heartrate spike halfway through lol.

They definitely can be exhausting but also killer! Even though their usual albums are only 30 minutes or so it's just brutal front to back. And I think you're right about them not having a bass, although the guitarist splits his signal to guitar and bass cabs I believe. That said there are parts of this where it does sound like a bass is going, but maybe he's just cutting the signal to the guitar amps?

There's so much lowend that it's hard to figure out. Anecdotally, when I was recording back in the day, I tuned down my 7-string and mimicked bass lines on the 7th string since I didn't own or play bass at the time and it was a passable attempt.

That sounds like it would probably get pretty close. I tracked some war/black metal songs a few months ago just on Reaper but never got around to picking up a bass. Might have to do something similar, but I'm already running my six string on like C standard, so idk how much lower I can get it lol

Plus, I have no idea how to program drums.

I've used bought drum midis pretty much the entire time I've recorded music. It makes it hard cause you're essentially forming ideas around the midis rather than a more organic trial and error. You can edit the midis which makes things a bit easier instead of manual input of single notes. I don't know how it'd work in Reaper. I've been using Cakewalk/Cakewalk Sonar with Steven Slate Drums. It was so much easier when I had Logic Pro, though. But then my Mac got too old and I'm too lazy to set up a MacOS partition on my PC.
