Straight from the opening seconds 'A Funeral In Purgatory' displays some of the best, most exciting synth work on an album in the extreme metal universe in quite some time. The synth is unapologetic, gimmick-free and in your face as are the excellent screamed, guttural and clean vocal sections. One of the other highlights of the record is the production. For a very loud, chaotic and intense mix of sounds, somehow every element comes through pretty much crystal clear and at sufficient levels. Tight songwriting and good variety in the tracks rounds things out. 'Flashback' is an absolute SOTY candidate and beyond that highlights include 'This Eternal Curse', the overloaded dissonant chaos in '...in purgatory', and the slower vibes from 'still' and 'mourn'. 2025 hasn't been standout for metal in my eyes (sadly) but this record is one to remember.
