Production is spotless and really does a good job balancing the beats, instrumentation, raps and the dark atmosphere of the project. Overall that instrumentation (strings, pianos, organs, etc etc) and the beats are the strength of the record as on the whole you get a blend of jazz rap, soul and experimental hip hop that equates to something very nice. The issue here is after a few listens that only goes so far and many of the tracks lack personality on their own. Lyrics are chilling at times considering the posthumous nature of the album. Just feels a bit thrown together and lacks cohesion.

These outtakes from 2013-2014 do a good job at representing where Mac Miller was sonically lying back then: at the confluence of jazz, cloud, and abstract rap with dashes of neo-soul. During that time, he also accepted to put his vulnerabilities on wax, which again shows tremendously on Balloonerism. There are some exceptional cuts here ("Funny Papers", "Rick's Piano", but most of this is what it is: outtakes.
