I like this new sombre Bird against a minimal string'n'percussion backdrop. His wit is sharp as always, and the song-writing can be quite lovely indeed. That said, he has never been exactly the best vocalist, and especially this instrumental presentation shows that bluntly clear. Besides, sometimes the instrumentation does come off as more of a means to fill up the void than a creatively conducted song. The chemistry between Bird and his accompanists sometimes just isn't there.
