Review Summary: Implosive Disgorgence return like a bulldozer in overdrive
After nearly 15 years in hibernation, Florida’s Implosive Disgorgence reemerged with
War Crimes, a blistering 6-track deathgrind assault that wastes no time announcing their return. Clocking in at just under 17 minutes, this EP delivers a sound that’s still crushingly heavy but notably more focused and channeled than their 2000s-era chaotic fury.
The highlight? The vocals. Absurdly low, guttural, and monstrously powerful growls. Think early Whitechapel vocals with a gnarlier, more original twist, broken up by occasional shrieks. Coupled with airtight drumming and riffs that bulldoze through the mix like an unrelenting tank, alongside biting social and political commentary, Implosive Disgorgence deliver a powerful statement.
The breakdowns are well-placed and so earth-shattering they might just throw the planet off its axis for a moment, adding more dynamics to the relentless assault. Unlike the gimmicky, drawn-out breakdowns common in some modern deathcore, these breakdowns flow naturally with the songs. The short runtime benefits the EP, keeping its intensity from becoming overwhelming, like a spice-packed meal that’s satisfying but best enjoyed in small doses.
War Crimes may not reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t have to. It’s a focused and punishing return from a band that has sharpened its brutality rather than letting rust set in. More refined, more deliberate, and just as furious as ever, Implosive Disgorgence are back, and they still sound pissed.
