There are only so many times a band can slice and serve from the same loaf before disinterest sets in. Firewind have always been fun, but they refuse to evolve or innovate. Good background music (working out or gaming), but nothing to seriously sit down and listen to.

Judging the album per se, it can be safely said that Immortals reverberates every euro-power metal cliche ever devised. This holds despite the fact that in principle, the album's epic concept about the Spartans' fateful battle against Persia in Thermopylae, would be expected to spark a more inspired approach, songwriting-wise. Be that as it may, Immortals packs a more solid punch than its direct predecessor. Sound is somewhat grittier, with a good song-to-song flow, that's not affected by Firewind's chronic traveling through the motions.

I usually like bands which praise history in their songs. Firewind's eighth studio release Immortals has the battle at Thermopylae in ancient Greece as its main theme. The powerful riffing of the opening tracks "Hands of Time" and "We Defy", reminded me of the band's Burning Earth days while "Wars of Ages" brought had an Allegiance feeling. Fond of ballads, Gus G dispenses "Lady of a 1000 Sorrows" before an instrumental mayhem ("Immortals") and an agonising end. Recommendations: "Rise From The Ashes", "Hands of Time", "Ode to Leonidas".
