Review Summary: If you like your post-metal intellectual and sludgy, this one is for you.

Free albums tend to be pretty slapshod – demos of demos, b-sides of b-sides, that sort of thing. So for Light Bearer to give a full live recording away as a “thank you” is pretty cool. Though basically a band-issued bootleg, Live in Sedel has a pleasantly murky quality akin to, say, Thou or Weakling. The London sextet’s brand of post-metal stands up well in such an environment thanks to its pounding chords and syncopated drum patterns – it’s easy to forget the studio nuances during the call-and-response verses of “Primum Movens” and ominous opening to “Prelapsus”.

Live in Sedel opens with “Celestium Apocrypha,” a 17-minute epic from the 2012 Northless split, followed by three of the four tracks from Lapsus. The former has two distinct parts, opening with rolling drums and pulsating chords that eventually give way to a creepy bridge, before breaking into a synth-laden vamp – think latter-day Isis. Light Bearer turn the page with chanted interlude “The Metatron”, then launch into centerpiece “Lapsus”, foregoing the outro and instead ending with its roaring climax. Though Alex's vocals are set low in the mix, the instruments are clear enough to each be heard, and the band's intensity keeps the album exciting for all 48 minutes.

The actual performance aside, this album is still pretty lo-fi. Throughout the show, crowd chatter bleeds into the recording; depending on your taste for live albums, that either makes for annoying distractions or a really cool in-the-crowd vibe. Personally, I would lean towards the cool vibe. Light Bearer are a band with a very bright future, especially if they can maintain or improve the quality of their debut throughout their four-album story. Overall, Live in Sedel remains an enjoyable slab of metal despite its recording. This one is best enjoyed with a lyric sheet, but if you’re a fan of Neurosis and their ilk, go ahead and add it to your collection.

Feedback is appreciated. Sort of a short review, but I think it gets the point across.

What's wrong with posting Mediafire links? Bannable?

Anyway, this is pretty damn lo fi but the band is so fucking tight live. It's kind of hard to write a review about a live album since essentially all you can talk about is the quality and performance since the other reviews talk about the actual music. Kudos.

thanks Xing. I'm a huge fan of live albums so I've written reviews for a bunch of them. You're right

though, there's no real musical analysis to it (especially since I've already done that), so writing a

substantive review can be difficult.

yeah I cut it up with audacity. I sort of like that it's one

piece though, gives it an old-school vinyl feeling.

I'd buy a vinyl of this if it was cheap.

The cleans on Prelapsus are a bit of a bummer. That's my favorite part of the song. Such is life.

they should have just dropped the cleans for this. I'm usually too busy singing over it to notice

though. I mean, it's still only like 20 seconds out of the whole album.

They were planning on having the cleans feature quite a bit on Silver Tongue. Wonder what they're gonna do now.

well there's gotta be someone in england who's able and willing. they've put too much effort into this thing to fuck it up with bad vocals

I doubt they'd fuck it up with bad vocals. Knowing Alex, I'd just assume he would either take out the cleans entirely or find a replacement for the record.

hello folks, saw this review on our facebook, needed a little clear up - this wasn't a "live album" - lee records every set we do. It allows us to go over bits we aren't happy with and tweak ideas. We actually do cut out the majority of clean vocals on tour, and changed the ending of prelapsus to a chorus of screams. Tom was an awesome singer, but none of us have his range, so we just cut them. My voice is a lot lower, (vocals on the metatron are me) after a few days of screaming, no one is going to be singing in any case, regardless, Matthew sometimes gets caught up in the moment and gives it a go. When you can't hear yourself its pretty impossible in any case to sing in tune. I haven't listened to the recording that far to know how they sound. Trust me, we've debated this a fair few times! I am dead against singing live, unless we can hear ourselves. What singing appears on silver tongue will be within our range, but live, we usually replace singing with screaming because its more natural, not forced and live is an altogether different experience in any case. This recording was done on a tiny mic at the back of a room, and isn't to be considered anything more than a rough recording, where we don't try to cover up our very human shortcomings! We'd never be so arrogant to release a "live album" especially after just one album and a couple of eps! But for the most part, despite the shocking ending to prelapsus (most other nights its much better!) hope you enjoyed it! Alex x

well there you have it, Xing: Mr. CF is indeed on top of things.

thanks for the input Alex. I didn't mean to imply arrogance on your part -- as fans it's cool too hear how things evolve, especially with the new lineup. can't wait for the finished product, singing and all.

@Alex: I actually figured you guys would cut them out of live performances anyway. I imagine being in front of you hearing it live would change it and no one would really care about the singing at that moment because of the energy. Good to hear that you know this too. I hope Silver Tongue features some nice cleans though. Prelapsus was my favorite track off of Lapsus and the moment the cleans kick in with your screaming over it.. Amazing. Anyway, best of luck with the recording and I hope you dudes come to the US someday. I'll sell my organs to go (after the show of course).

playing live is nerve wracking enough without the added pressure to sing in tune, i know that Tom struggled live and that guy can sure sing, on a number of occasions even when he was hitting those highs people complained it wasn't as strong as the album, which is impossible, its an entirely different setting, and to be honest the sung vocals on the album were worked on at the point of recording, we had never planned or experimented in a live setting. This is all trial and error, its all a case of creating something that we all love, and for me, the writing and recording is my passion, live is putting yourself under a lot of pressure. Turns out it was Gerfried singing on the rough recording, and we had never rehearsed it properly! I don't think he even had a monitor at that show! Silver tongue has clean yes, and we may even have Tom singing on the record! and pedro - everyone in bands is seen as arrogant, its difficult to convey sincerity or points of view via the internet, and chronic shyness is always mistaken for it! I know you weren't accusing, that was my worry alone, but then again that is my worry full stop, we are a small diy band, we have no delusions beyond playing some shows and recording these records, which we care about way too much. But I can assure you I love this record, just last practice I had goosebumps listening to the guys play! but we are also are biggest critics, and want to make a record that encapsulates our enthusiasm and passion for the music and story, so what we eventually release will be as close to that as possible I hope! Hope you guys like it once its finished! and one day we may tour the states, but touring isn't a priority for any of us, we have to save up for recording first and thats a feat!
