Incubus S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Possibly the best "nu-metal" album of all time, and I put nu-metal in quotes because this is far from a
traditional nu-metal album. Incubus go above and beyond with S.C.I.E.N.C.E., combining infectious
catchy choruses with funky verses, stellar song writing, a phenomenal saxophone solo in "Summer Romance,"
and some energizing rapping and screaming from Brandon Boyd; not to mention the fact that the rest of the
band are as tight as ever. This album for me is Incubus in their prime: playing fresh, energetic funk rock and
best of all, it sounds like they were having a shitload of fun doing it.

Megadeth Rust in Peace
Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
Although being the second most bloated NIN album ever recorded (after Ghosts I-IV) and not hitting
nearly as hard on an emotional level as its predecessor, The Fragile has some of Reznor's absolute best
work and the sheer amount of gems puts this above anything else he's ever done. Admittedly there's a fair
amount of filler, being a 23 track long double album it's to be expected. However there's a distinct quality of
each song, whether it be anger ('Somewhat Damaged'), optimism ('We're in This Together'), or flat out cheese
('Pilgrimage') that makes each one integral to the album's sense of completeness. The Fragile contains
Reznor's most experimentation and most questionable lyrics, but what puts this above all his other works is
the raw ambition.

This album is highly recommended to anyone with ears.

Between the Buried and Me The Silent Circus
Between the Buried and Me Alaska
Alaska is Between the Buried and Me doing what they do best: combining metalcore, progressive rock, jazz, death metal, and even post-rock to create a wonderful listening experience through and through. It's a transition album, melding together the hardcore intensity of The Silent Circus and the proggy escapades of Colors, but in my opinion they combined both styles perfectly here to create an almost flawless record.

Deftones Saturday Night Wrist
Deftones Koi No Yokan
This is a more subdued album by Deftones calling back at their Saturday Night Wrist days. Overall it's not as outright accessible as Diamond Eyes was nor as heavy and nu-metal inspired as their previous albums, but with repeated listens each individual song slowly shows its true beauty. Tracks such as "Rosemary," "Leathers," and "Poltergeist" are classic Deftones; in fact there's really not a weak link on the album. My only complaint is that the closing track(s) ("Goon Squad" is arguably the weakest song on the record) leaves a lot to be desired and is a fairly underwhelming way to end such a flawless record, yet in a sense it accomplishes exactly what it should in that it leaves you wanting more. I'd say Koi No Yokan beats out White Pony as the best Deftones album. They've finally managed to release a classic and they're not showing any signs of slowing down.

In Vain AEnigma
In Vain return with a worthy follow up to Mantra, increasing their melodic side and replacing the dense atmosphere of its predecessor with a cleaner counterpart fit with orchestral synths and saxophone solos. The instrumentation is as strong as ever, as is the songwriting, but the clean production does detract from the atmosphere a bit. I'd say this easily surpasses Mantra, and apart from the awkward spoken word segment in 'Culmination of the Enigma,' didn't disappoint in the slightest.

'Floating on the Murmuring Tide' is one of the best tracks of 2013 thus far.

Cryptopsy Once Was Not
Cryptopsy The Unspoken King
This album is definitely a grower, yet even at its best it doesn't touch their first three albums. There are very obvious flaws that prevent this from being anything more than a solid deathcore album from a band that can do much better. The first three tracks are top-quality deathcore songs though and most other songs are good but "Bemoan the Martyr" almost single-handedly ruins the album. At the very least, this is a fresh change of pace from the mundane Once Was Not and And Then You'll Beg, TUK being considerably better than the latter.

This actually isn't half bad. Pretty standard as far as metalcore goes but it has some sweet riffs, the small
doses of melody are done well, it's consistent, and best of all, it sounds nothing like their other shit
Light Bearer Silver Tongue
As bloated as it is frustrating, Light Bearer's second album is plagued by complete and utter lack of inspiration during its middle tracks. Download 'Beautiful Is This Burden,' 'Aggressor & Usurper,' and 'Silver Tongue,' and forget the rest ever existed.

Muse The Resistance
Muse The 2nd Law
Simply put, this album is a mess. Muse graduated from ripping off Queen to ripping off Jamiroquai, U2,
Skrillex, and even ripping off themselves. There are some great songs admittedly, such as the ones where
the bassist does the lead vocals, "Animals," and "Supremacy," but ultimately they're not good enough to
overshadow the godawful singles and they don't even touch the worst songs off Absolution. Regardless,
it's a fun album to listen to and if you're a Muse fan or are just in the mood for mindless pop-dubstep-
classical influenced alternative rock, it's worth checking out.

Darkthrone Plaguewielder
Not a bad album by any means but for a black metal Darkthrone album it's very underwhelming. Most tracks, especially "Weakling Avenger" and "Wreak," have quality Darkthrone riffs; the main issue with the the album is consistency. For every great riff, there's a mediocre one to ruin its momentum. But on the upside, the songs that start off pitifully usually have a redeemable section or two to make it worthwhile, such as "I, Voidhanger" and its classic black metal outro. Worth a listen if you're a Darkthrone fan, but it is their weakest album.

Persefone Spiritual Migration
Jesus Christ, what happened to this band? One of the most mundane wankfests of a prog metal album I've heard in recent memory, and that's including Dream Theater and Symphony X. Some of these songs are downright terrible and all have the subtlety of an elephant; but when they're not ferociously masturbating away on their instruments and overusing offensively cheesy sci-fi keyboard effects, Spiritual Migration almost succeeds. It's a shame, Core was sooo good. Now they're using djent-ish breakdowns while constantly playing as fast as they physically can, seriously what the fuck.
