Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
Despite being the second most bloated NIN album after Ghosts I-IV and not hitting as hard
on an emotional level as its predecessor, The Fragile boasts some of the absolute best
material Trent Reznor has ever written. Admittedly, there's some filler, which is expected in a 23-
track long double album. But there's a unique or emotion quality in each song, ranging from anger
(Somewhat Damaged) to flat out cheese (Pilgrimage), that makes each piece integral to the
album's whole.

Between the Buried and Me Alaska
Alaska is Between the Buried and Me doing what they do best: combining metalcore, progressive rock, jazz, death metal, and even post-rock to create a wonderful listening experience through and through. It's a transition album, melding together the hardcore intensity of The Silent Circus and the proggy escapades that would later be developed on Colors. However, on Alaska they combine both styles perfectly to create a beautifully brutal album - the record of their career.

Incubus (USA-CA) S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Possibly the best "nu-metal" album of all time, and I put nu-metal in quotes because this is far from a traditional nu-metal album. Incubus go above and beyond with S.C.I.E.N.C.E., combining infectious catchy choruses with funky verses, stellar song writing, a phenomenal saxophone solo in "Summer Romance," and some energizing rapping and screaming from Brandon Boyd; not to mention the fact that the rest of the band are as tight as ever. This album for me is Incubus in their prime: playing fresh, energetic funk rock and best of all, it sounds like they're having a shitload of fun doing it.

Johann Sebastian Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565
Johann Sebastian Bach Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068
There's a reason why "Air" is one of the most popular pieces of all time. Despite it's relatively simplistic
nature, it contains some of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching melodies Bach has ever written; and
these are intertwined with blissful counter-melodies creating a deeply euphoric sensation for the
listener (there's a reason it's played at so many weddings!). The rendition here is unlike the well-known
arrangement "Air on the G String", though, in that the use of harpsichord is present throughout. It adds
an interesting texture to the wonderfully layered strings, and a welcome sense of antiquity to the music
itself.

The rest of the suite is exceptional as well. The contrast between the eclectic, powerful "Overture"
leading into the tender, ethereal "Air" is a perfect juxtaposition. At only 24-minutes, this suite is
something no fan of classical should miss out on.

Ludwig van Beethoven "Pastoral" Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68
Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61
The 23-minute epic of a first movement is among Beethoven's best orchestral compositions. It
has it all - soaring violin cadenzas, hauntingly effective use of the timpani, and a tastefully
bombastic motif that gets modulated and broken down into various, equally beautiful themes
throughout the piece. The second and third movements, clocking in at a little under 10 minutes
each, hold their own as well, especially the captivating finale Rondo. Allegro, which contains
some of the fastest and emotive violin work Beethoven had ever arranged. Simply brilliant.

In Vain (NO) Aenigma
In Vain return with a worthy follow up to Mantra, increasing their melodic side and replacing the dense atmosphere of its predecessor with a cleaner counterpart fit with orchestral synths and saxophone solos. The instrumentation is as strong as ever, as is the songwriting, but the clean production does detract from the atmosphere a bit. I'd say this easily surpasses Mantra, and apart from the awkward spoken word segment in 'Culmination of the Enigma,' didn't disappoint in the slightest.

'Floating on the Murmuring Tide' is one of the best tracks of 2013 thus far.

This is the exact direction I hoped they wouldn't go in. Hardly any real riffs, everything's blown up
and over-the-top, Tommy is singing almost the entire time, etc. That's not to say it doesn't have
great moments, but the gratuitous wank overshadows just about anything else. Their weakest
album so far.

EDIT: So turns out this album is a grower. There are classic BtBaM moments here for sure and
there's a sense of cohesion to it similar to The Great Misdirect. However it could have done
without a couple tracks, i.e. 'The Ectopic Stroll' and 'Rapid Calm'.

Tomorrow Never Dies is a generically entertaining action movie, but this soundtrack makes it
a thrilling Bond film. It's tender and tense at the right moments; bits of 'Surrender' weave
their way into the melodies, elevating the action on screen. It's what you'd want in a Bond
soundtrack.

Deftones Koi No Yokan
This is a more subdued album by Deftones calling back to their Saturday Night Wrist days. Overall it's not as outright accessible as Diamond Eyes was nor as heavy and nu-metal inspired as their previous albums, but with repeated listens each individual song slowly shows its true beauty. Tracks such as "Rosemary," "Leathers," and "Poltergeist" are classic Deftones; in fact there's not a weak link on the album. I'd say Koi No Yokan beats out White Pony but falls a bit short of Saturday Night Wrist, their best album. In any case, Koi No Yokan shows us the band at their most polished and elegant, even more so than Diamond Eyes. Hopefully they can keep this winning streak going.

Fallujah Dreamless
Compared to The Flesh Prevails, the production is better but the riffs are weaker, and this album has no right to be an hour long. The songs bleed into each other with little variation between them bar two electronic filler tracks that are completely misplaced here and serve only to further bloat the album.

That said, Dreamless is consistently solid tech death. The instrumentals are tight as ever; the material just doesn't feel nearly as inspired as their previous work. Fallujah decided to take the safe route here, which is fine because they're great at what they do. I just hoped for so much more.

It's what you'd expect from The Black Dahlia Murder, which at this point should be fierce melodic death metal far above the average. It won't go down in the books as one of the greats, but Abysmal's sheer intensity and ease in its execution gives the album, and TBDM as a whole, the unique ability to make melodeath sound fresh again.

The Ghost Within The Ghost Within
A surprisingly effective fusion of instrumental prog metal with electronic beats over a tastefully synthetic backdrop. Neither style is sacrificed in favor of the other - the electronic tracks are well-rounded and maturely written, and the heavier songs keep the distorted guitars in the forefront while maintaining a sense of both atmospheric continuity and musical unpredictability. It is a tad on the long side pushing the hour-long mark, and the longer tracks rely too much on repetition causing the good ideas to overstay their welcome. But for a debut album, The Ghost Within shows great promise not only for the band itself, but also for progressive music and where it seems to be heading in the near future.

Not a bad album by any means but for a black metal Darkthrone album it's very underwhelming. Most tracks, especially "Weakling Avenger" and "Wreak," have quality Darkthrone riffs; the main issue with the the album is consistency. For every great riff, there's a mediocre one to ruin its momentum. But on the upside, the songs that start off pitifully usually have a redeemable section or two to make it worthwhile, such as "I, Voidhanger" and its classic black metal outro. Worth a listen if you're a Darkthrone fan, but it is their weakest album.

Worth it for "Flight into Space" alone. Beautiful piece of music that works even better in tandem with the scene it's used in. With gorgeous visuals of Earth and the looming shot of Drax's massive space station, the music combines both the serenity of space with the menace of the imminent threat of human extinction.

The rest of the score is standard John Barry, which means it's well above average. And hey, the movie is fun too.

Simply put, this album is a mess. Muse graduated from ripping off Queen to ripping off Jamiroquai, U2, Skrillex, and even ripping off themselves. There are some great songs admittedly, such as the ones where the bassist does the lead vocals, "Animals," and "Supremacy," but ultimately they're not good enough to overshadow the godawful singles and they don't even touch the worst songs off Absolution. Regardless, it's a fun album to listen to and if you're a Muse fan or are just in the mood for mindless pop-dubstep-classical influenced alternative rock, it's worth checking out.

Jesus Christ, what happened to this band? One of the most mundane wankfests of a prog metal album I've heard in recent memory, and that's including Dream Theater and Symphony X. Some of these songs are downright terrible and all have the subtlety of an elephant; but when they're not ferociously masturbating away on their instruments and overusing offensively cheesy sci-fi keyboard effects, Spiritual Migration almost succeeds. It's a shame, Core was sooo good. Now they're using djent-ish breakdowns while constantly playing as fast as they physically can, seriously what the fuck.

Cryptopsy The Unspoken King
There are very obvious flaws that prevent The Unspoken King from being anything more than a solid attempt at a deathcore album. The first three tracks are top-quality deathcore and most other songs are decent ("Anoint the Dead") or at least listenable ("Bound Dead"), but the godawful nu-metal inspired "Bemoan the Martyr" almost single-handedly ruins the album. Not to mention this album has one of the worst metal closers of all time. At the very least, The Unspoken King is a fresh change of pace from the mundane Once Was Not and And Then You'll Beg.
