08.03.20 | I'm enjoying Dragon Quest XI S atm, it's pretty chill and a massive time sink. Animal crossing is also pretty mellow and relaxing.
Shovel knight, hollow knight and binding of isaac for sure for indies. The Borderlands and Bioshock collections are solid for switch fps, and are absurd value for money. |

Also my all-time favorite game soundtrack. |

AsleepInTheBack
08.03.20 | I'm about 30 hours into the switch version. Doesn't look like its gonna end anytime soon and it's a real chill ride. I've not played many jrpgs so i dont have much of a frame of reference, but I think it's great. Combat and story aren't very deep so far, but it's just very satisfying and gorgeous and whimsical and disarmingly charming. Nowhere near as grindy as I was led to believe either. |

08.07.20 | loveisamixtape - You won't go wrong with either HLD or HK, honestly. I will say Hollow Knight is a much longer game. You can get through Hyper Light in like 10 hours with taking your time and all that. Hollow Knight can last 40 hours easily, or even longer. But that's because you'll be exploring all you can in Hollow Knight.
That being said...the experience of playing Hollow Knight has stuck with me more than damn near any game released in the last decade. I kind of wish I could play it again for the first time.
So in essence--Hollow Knight will take time, and Hyper Light is also a fantastic game, so I might suggest Hyper Light first. Just be sure to at least get to Hollow Knight at some point. |
loveisamixtape
08.07.20 | gr8 write up, hollow knight is definitely going to be in the next 2 games I get. i decided on hyper light drifter, 2 hours in and it is... Pretty difficult but god dam disasterpeace killed the soundtrack so hard |

there is a ~soft~ order to the four areas according to difficulty. I just wung it and the first area i chose was like the second hardest or something lol. died a million times but i definitely got gud by the time i beat the boss lmao. the next area and boss felt like a breeze after that |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.23.20 | Im not very far. Like an hour in or something. Charming for sure and the music is good agreed but I already find the idea of navigating these enemy encounters for the rest of the first run to be a bit painful, let alone for two more runs for the other two endings. They just arent fun to me |
RabbitSeason

Astral Chain is amazing if you want a unique action game. has a bit of a slow start and the story isn't anything to write home about but about 5 chapters in everything really opens up. last boss was one of the best fights I've played in years |
GreyShadow
10.23.20 | Hollow Knight will pick up tremendously when you get a few more movement upgrades.
steamworld dig 2 is another great metroidvania |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.23.20 | " I guess at least you won't find gameplay like it elsewhere ha"
Yeah true it's a unique little combat system but I honestly kind of find random encounter designs in games to get tedious pretty quickly in general and the dragging them out by turning them into a weird mix of dialogue puzzling and ghetto bullet hell isnt helping for me. It's got a lot of character but I just dont feel very stimulated.
I'm interested in that Moon RPG that it takes influence from tho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.23.20 | "Undertale only gets "boring" in the genocide run and the payoff is super worth it so..."
Well it's already boring for me and I'm only an hour into a neutral run so that doesn't bode well. Especially when pacifist and genocide runs both sound even more tedious |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.23.20 | Also played the first steam world a little but got real bored real quick with that too. The turn based tactical steamworld game was kinda fun tho |
RabbitSeason
10.23.20 | Random encounters were cool the first 99 games I played that had em, but they're definitely overdone
In other news, subnautica is coming to switch early 2021 if you like horror, sci fi, and light survival elements |
aydross121
10.23.20 | What undertale does best is the way it breaks the 4th wall imo, in the way only a video game could.
But yeah I can see not liking the mini bullet-hells |
Masochist
10.24.20 | "Hollow Knight will pick up tremendously when you get a few more movement upgrades."
That one. It seems a little slow in the beginning, but it does in fact pick up. Tell you what though. A lot of the fun is in exploring the areas and seeing what you can find. It IS huge though and there is a lot out there to find and all that. I say try to stick with it a little longer...but if the exploration just doesn't do it for you after a few more hours, perhaps look for something else.
...like the ORI series. Have you ever played Ori and the Blind Forest/Will Of The Wisps? A metroidvania as well, but in a completely different vein from Hollow Knight in that it is colorful, not near as dour, and waaaay more exploration based than combat based. Both of them are also shorter. And as an added bonus, WOTW is probably, hands down, the prettiest 2D game I've ever played. |
Colton
10.24.20 | might start a new Celeste run tonight. I hate all the story bullshit though |

loveisamixtape
11.05.20 | hades is sooooo fun lol i think its better than dead cells tbh |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.05.20 | Damn, I was honestly gonna pass it up just based off the transistor and bastion combat but now I am reconsidering |
loveisamixtape
11.05.20 | i agree about the combat in both of those games bc i bought all 3 during the sale. hades is the best and most fun combat of the 3 by far. all of the weapons are so much fun to get fluent with , the dash function is lots of fun as well , so are the power ups etc. it has extremely clicked |
loveisamixtape
11.05.20 | transistor is cool to me in ways but what i dislike most about it is that it reminds me of like gears of war or something lol. possibly just bc the sluggish combat |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.05.20 | That's great because as I had said earlier, from a narrative standpoint I think both of those games are fantastic. Combine that with gameplay that's actually fun and you've got a real winner
|
loveisamixtape
11.05.20 | yeah ! transistor is fun and so is bastion, they both are limited by the gameplay for sure. if hades was like hyper light drifter or something, had like a more refined explorative aspect to it (or if it was just a straight up RPG) it’d be a 5/5 for me prob. reminds me now of playing HLD bc i also enjoy the combat in HLD a lot n clearing the rooms can be as challenging if not more so. but its def fast paced and dodgy which is my sh*t |
loveisamixtape
11.05.20 | also no dis to dead cells at all bc i played it a lot and enjoyed it but if i'm craving the whole one roll game kind of thing i don't think i'll hit it up again for quite a while |

nol
11.28.20 | that's fun too lots of unlockables |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.28.20 | only reason i havent played them both is i got the treasure trove edition on wii u before king of cards dlc as out so i technically already paid for it as it was to be included upon release, but i got a switch and stopped playing / eventually sold my wii u so now i'd have to spend money on something i already bought and that just doesn't sit well with me |

11.29.20 | I actually just did that because treasure trove was on sale for the switch lol. I wanted it handheld. Shovel Knight: Treasure w/e

12.02.20 | Only game I ever platinumed on my ps3 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.02.20 | i have almost bought that game numerous times based on the ghibli art style and world but watching gameplay and reading reviews always make me hesitate. some of the criticisms of it make it sound like it's a big grind sometimes and that the random encounter rates are infuriating |
Keyblade
12.02.20 | it was too hard to turn down that deal. it looks like a great game |
el_newg
12.03.20 | New n Tasty is ok, prob easiest way to play Oddysee these days but it doesn't hold a candle to the original.
I picked up Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze |
Keyblade
12.03.20 | tropical freeze is so good, but so hard especially in 2 player mode |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

tectactoe
12.03.20 | walmart offering a deal right now - a pro controller that comes with a digital download of Super Mario Odyssey for $70. so you're basically buying a controller and getting Odyssey for free. jumped on that shit immediately because i only have one pro controller atm and my wife hates using the joycons. |
Keyblade
12.03.20 | pots do it, it's like 75% off

All fun. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.04.20 | Yeah I did end up getting it |
nol
12.05.20 | oh the random encounters aren’t that bad. You can actually escape enemies when you need to, it’s not truly random. The game definitely takes some grinding, especially when you want to capture a specific familiar. |

12.05.20 | now Ni No Kuni 2 was fucking trash |

12.06.20 | is hades actually good? |
loveisamixtape
12.06.20 | it is yes the improvement in combat compared to their other games is nuts , it is very fun to me. i tried to play dead cells yesterday after hades phase and it felt so much less fun as a rogue like |
nol
12.06.20 | see I in general don’t like rogue-likes, so while Hades is getting lots of hype, I’m still kinda hesitant. Is it randomly generated? |
nol
12.06.20 | If I don’t like rogue-like games, will this change my mind? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.20 | what rogue-likes have you played that have painted your perception negative |
nol
12.06.20 | fr I don’t entirely know what the genre entails. I played Darkest Dungeon on my switch, found it really really boring. I’m not a fan of procedurally generates dungeons, like diablo. The game design feels less intentional. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.20 | i havent played darkest dungeon but it looks kind of lame and i don't really care much for diablo either tbh. honestly when i first heard about rogue-likes the prospect didn't appeal to me much but after having played several really good ones i've change my tune a bit. within the conditions for it to be considered a rogue-like there is a lot of room for variance so something like enter the gungeon and dead cells are gonna be completely different experiences, with the former being a fast paced, zany bullet-hell and the latter being more having more of a dark souls inspired platformer spirit. These are both games within the niche where i feel that they defy the negative expectations you might have about procedurally generated levels. I think meaningful progression and intelligent area generation are two of the most critical components for a good rogue-like though. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.20 | within rogue-like and rogue-lite the most notable games i've found so far are
Dead Cells and Enter the Gungeon as noted
Moonlighter
Sundered |
nol
12.06.20 | Might give it a try if it goes on sale, artstyle looked awesome, it was just the gameplay that sketches me out. If the levels are meaningfully designed like you say I’ll probably dig it. |
nol
12.06.20 | I’ve come very close to buying enter the gungeon before, idk why I didn’t, might try that as well. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.20 | Sundered probably doesn't count on second thought
Enter the Gungeon is so much fun and its got great couch coop which is a big plus |
tectactoe
12.06.20 | Super Mario Odyssey is great so far. Love the open world concept much more than the more delineated, level-based structure of SM3DW. |
SymbolicInTime
12.06.20 | Didn't see anybody mention
Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Golf Story |
loveisamixtape
12.06.20 | i haven’t played moonlighter tbh i will try it
i started dead cells when i didn’t rly get rogue likes and it grew on me eventually, but got old bc it seems like it takes sooooo long to get weapons that aren’t just good, but that are fun to use. i don’t like how robotic some of the enemies are and absolutely fuckin Loathe the often unavoidable toxic sewers. hades to me is like diablo 2 kind of but the way the game goes it doesn’t set an insanely large range of different weapons you may possibly unlock , u gradually unlock 6 different weapons that can all be used differently , all are equally as good if u can figure out how to use them , and all can be ridiculously powerful if you cleverly play to the strengths of your boon choices and boon combinations. the story depends on you dying as much as it does you winning and since it’s Greek mythology, dying however way having that effect on the story doesn’t feel unnatural or forced. also like someone said the art style is extremely cool and that’s one of my fav things about it besides just like, the whole process of building your character for a run |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.06.20 | i didn't like mario rabbids or golf story much |
SymbolicInTime
12.07.20 | Man, mario rabbids was probably my favorite switch game I've played so far. Got a lot out of the 2 player mode playing with my wife too |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.07.20 | yeah i know some other people that stan too
it just didn't feel like the mechanics progressed enough to maintain my interest and i had just played Three Houses which was a much more appealing take on turn based strat for me. I just kinda stopped playing after a while |
SymbolicInTime
12.07.20 | I came directly off of playing xcom 2, so I'm kinda surprised I liked it as much as I did. Though my turn based strat experience pretty much starts and ends at those two. Oh! And Valkyria Chronicles |

12.07.20 | rabbids make me want to kms |

12.07.20 | a nintendo crossover strategy game could be cool, but not that |

12.08.20 | Question for those recommending Hades: how is it compared to Bastion? That’s the only one I’ve played from that dev, as it grew stale for me after a bit so I haven’t gone back to try their others. |
loveisamixtape
12.08.20 | similar art style n aesthetic / far more engaging and combat focused gameplay. it’s a rogue-like with a long story. i have both n like hades the most |

conesmoke
12.22.20 | Haha Key I'm so glad you agree :) loveis, that's cool you like it, after about 80 shrines it seemed to me they got lazy and started burying them all in tiny chambers that really weren't that exciting to find. |
Keyblade
12.22.20 | if they were leading to unique areas it would be better, but it's usually just another forest or lake. everything starts to blend together a bit. still though, seeing something far off into the horizon and actually making your way over is unbeatable |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | I did enjoy the divine beasts to be fair. One of my favourite parts. Yeah it can be fun, but when it rains omg... Wanna slap Link with all his slipping |
Colton
12.22.20 | that's why you have to be really high when you're playing it. you can't blame the game design when you're not doing your part to enjoy it optimally |
Keyblade
12.22.20 | u literally just have to stand there and wait for it to stop raining lol it sucks
i've done the camel and the elephant so far, and i'm not sure I like the elaborate meta-puzzle of each beast over the mini room-specific puzzles of the traditional games |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | I did the Camel last. Lol at the sexist Gerudo women wtf. Also those fairies that upgrade your clothes are cross dressing for sure. ive played high and sober, both fun but I thought both still dragged with the climbing but as I said before, very small complaint. It's a great game. |

12.22.20 | "anyone played god eater 3 ? it’s like 90% off rn and can’t tell if trap"
i've almost picked it up numerous times. watched some vids and read some reviews and i've finally decided to pass. it seems like its just a super anime version of monster hunter and i found the one monster hunter game i played to be insanely monotonous.
"if they were leading to unique areas it would be better, but it's usually just another forest or lake. everything starts to blend together a bit."
i mean botw objectively has the most beautiful, intuitive, and seamlessly crafted open world of all time. and the climbing is a revolutionary open world mechanic. |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | It's definitely not a "revolutionary open world mechanic" haha. Climbing in games has been around for a long time has it not pots? I agree wholeheartedly with BOTW being a beautiful looking game. That doesn't mitigate the tediousness of all the running around and climbing imo
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | i've never played an open world game with a climbing mechanic that limitless. i've played games with much less open climbing mechanics or ones like skyrim where you can jump up and down like a dumbass to try and spam past invisible walls when cliffs get too sheer and on the flipside i've played open world games with similar verticality but no climbing mechanic at all (mechs). it is revolutionary. it feels so natural and immersive and the sheer lack of limitations is refreshing af. and yes the beauty and excellent world design 100% does mitigate the tedium of open world experiences. its a tranquil, blissful, and enchanting world to traverse. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | i fucking stan |
ieatbabies795
12.22.20 | I want to get a switch just to play platformers like Cuphead
|
conesmoke
12.22.20 | Haha love you lots pots. The lack of limitations is true - they kinda gave Link suction cups for hands (can climb flat surfaces like a boss), if that's revolutionary then ok. Assassin's Creed maybe has a better climbing mech? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | hmm maybe, i wouldnt know i havent played an assassins creed game since the early ones tbh but in the ones i played it was kinda like horizon zero dawn where you really had to plot your climbs etc, which was a lot of fun but provided it's own set of limitations / created linear restraints |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | Anyone played through the Abe odyssey game "strangers wrath" any good? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | like im not saying it has the deepest climbing mechanic of anything ever - like i know sekiro has some pretty crazy verticality and climbing stuff too apparently - but the suction cup hand mechanic in botw just really is the final piece of the puzzle in regards to making an open world game feel truly "open" if you know what i mean. i've never felt so free and i really appreciate it. when ur early on and you don't have falco flappy jump, mountain equipment coop gear, and big long stamina it can be a chore when you decide u ain't going around that 1000 ft mountain but that's part of the fun too for me, "leveling up" in the game isn't so much increasing perks or attributes as it is just increasing your maneuverability and becoming able to swiftly ascend the biggest cliffs or clear the largest bodies of water without fearing for your life |
aydross121
12.22.20 | yeah I also stan climbing in botw, much better than other similar games.
Asscreds climbing is also good but seems a bit scripted in the sense that there are ledges for you to grab to already and you just have to press one button.
botw feels inspired by Shadow of the Colossus in the climbing, both are heavy stamina dependant, and both very fun. |
loveisamixtape
12.22.20 | ass cred |

12.22.20 | Very nicely put pots.
"I've never felt so free and i really appreciate it." And " "leveling up" in the game isn't so much increasing perks or attributes as it is just increasing your maneuverability and becoming able to swiftly ascend the biggest cliffs or clear the largest bodies of water without fearing for your life"
I can clearly see your point. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a whine and have too many recent memories of almost scaling a mountain then falling due to rain/lack of stamina, leading me to cuss under my breath and sprint the long route to the summit haha |

aydross121
12.22.20 | Talking about botw, does anyone else also think botw2 is going to be the best game ever?
Like I assume they spent a ton of time creating the physics engine on the first one, now they will have way more time adding interesting stuff with that framework.
|
conesmoke
12.22.20 | I think it will be pretty good. I also think it will expand on the weather controls, which I thought BOTW1 did nicely. Gimme more Goron storyline, loved those rock eating, forward rolling cretins lol.
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | yeah the fact that they are building off the previous games framework has me really excited tbh. The physics and sandbox were perfect in botw imo so the idea of them having vastly more time to just dedicate to running wild with more content gives me a mega bone-bone |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | One thing tho... Zelda being British... |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | Some of the character accents when they actually spoke dialogue (as opposed to a "gah!?" With text underneath) were a bit terrible. |

12.22.20 | From memory I couldn't wait to get away from that Zora prince for this reason |
el_newg
12.22.20 | assassins creed changed their climbing a few games ago where you can climb on almost anything. it's actually pretty good, prob one of the best things about the franchise now. its a series i used to like a lot but every new game just gets worse and worse. lots of other ppl seem to love it tho, constantly getting like 80+/100 on metacritic |

12.22.20 | Yeah lol the voice acting was pretty cheesy. I don't mind it but I feel like only text is perfectly fine for zelda. |
aydross121
12.22.20 | also botw2 is going to have like 1 thousand different enemies, no more recolouring baddies hopefully. |
conesmoke
12.22.20 | Yesss, more baddies would be nice. I think I would prefer text for the whole thing tbh |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.22.20 | yeah im hoping they utilize the time they save recycling assets making more baddies, building actual dungeons/temples, making cave systems, expanding your arsenal etc, really just bringing in the classic elements from the franchise that they couldn't fit into botw
like i wanna fall down a creepy hole in the ground and fight some zombies mmk |

01.15.21 | how do we feel about the ori game itt |
Masochist
01.15.21 | Both Ori games are incredible, IMO. Smooth and precise platforming, imaginative areas to explore, one of the best movement mechanics in any Metroidvania (as a powerup, so you get it a little ways into the first game), and probably the prettiest 2-D games ever made (that sounds like hyperbole...but it really isn't).
The 1st game has somewhat stunted combat (with really only three options to attack with), but it doesn't ruin the experience. And either way, it's remedied with the second game which gives you a wide range of weapons and a Hollow Knight-esque badge system for upgrades. The second game is damn near perfect, especially after they patched the bugs. |

01.19.21 | That’s fair. I’m sure there’s some messy details, but the aesthetics are what draw me to that game in the first place. The character design in Xenoblade 2 is not my thing. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | @mixT agreed hard on that, at the VERY least they should have given every gym leader a full roster of pokemon ffs. I really liked in the older games that once you got to the elite four you would be underleveled and would have to battle them over and over to grind for exp. Made beating them a lot more rewarding.
But otherwise a lot of the complaints that big poke nerds had like exp share were literally just quality of life improvements to me |

01.19.21 | Yo the characters in the first xenoblade chronicles game didn't even have individual fingers before the remaster, the graphics deffs were a bit sus at least for character design.
But I get the landscapes thing. X Landscapes are gorgeous |
nol
01.19.21 | I gotta get it on switch. Wii couldn’t handle a game as big as Cenoblade, they had to cut some corners, such as individual fingers ig lol. I bet it looks closer to how they envisioned it to look on the switch. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | Yeah I'm definitely gonna get the remaster one day |
tectactoe
01.19.21 | SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY was awesome, except way too short. And there's hardly much incentive to collect all the moons once you unlock the Darker Side (and even that is a lame "reward"). The campaign is excellent, though, I just wish it were longer. Hell even decades later and there's more meat on the bones of SM64.
Currently in the middle of BREATH OF THE WILD and loving it. Three divine beasts down, getting some more shrines under my belt and exploring a bit before tackling the next one. Really love the open concept of this game and how it doesn't smother you with linearity yet doesn't toss you to the wolves either. I like the spirit orb mechanism for heart pieces and stamina vessels - it's a nice change of pace from previous games. I miss the more traditional dungeons a little - the divine beasts are fun but lack the variety and challenge of some of the previous games' dungeons. Overall, though, amazing game.
Thinking about getting FIRE EMBLEM THREE HOUSES next, but I'll probably wait until it goes on sale. Never played a FIRE EMBLEM game before. Actually, I don't even know if I've played *any* "tactical" RPG before. Unless ADVANCE WARS counts lol. |
Keyblade
01.19.21 | yea I'm also kinda wary of dipping my toes into tactical rpg's. they just dont look very fun. I'll try a couple one day, the GBA has some classics apparently |
nol
01.19.21 | Advance Wars is made by the same company as Fire Emblem! So that totally counts lol. |
nol
01.19.21 | Advance Wars has been utterly forgotten, and that’s a fuckin shame. |
nol
01.19.21 | GBA classics are a great introduction into the genre. |
Project
01.19.21 | "But I get the landscapes thing. X Landscapes are gorgeous"
oh 100%, the environments and art direction in general are amazing — every game that ever wants to achieve a sense of scale should take notes from Xenoblade Chronicles. It's mostly the character models and textures that are rough. I haven't played the remaster but I kinda wish it got a full on next-gen treatment — that art direction with modern graphical power would be pretty awesome |
heyadam
01.19.21 | I’ll have to roll through xenoblade then - I wanna track down a physical copy so I can trade in some old games just so I don’t have to pay $60 for something idk if I’ll end up fully loving or not. Def more sold on it tho |
tectactoe
01.19.21 | Yeah ADVANCE WARS and the sequel (BLACK HOLE RISING) were phenomenal. I played the one on DS briefly, too (DUAL STRIKE) but not nearly as much as the first two, more so because I didn't have a DS very long. Love those games. |
nol
01.19.21 | I feel that — there’s a few digital games I’ve bought on switch that I wish I could get rid of for a little dough.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 at launch was one of my poorest financial decisions ever lol. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | I don't share the criticism about odyssey being too short tec at all tec, and I think the comment about n64 mario having more meat on its bones is an outright fabrication lmao. M64 has like what 120 stars? I collected all of them on the anniversary release except the 100 coin ones and it did not take very long at all. Odyssey has what? 1000 moons? I know not all of them are objectives, lots are purchases, but I think its still something ridiculous like 500-600 moons collect? There are more worlds and more objectives in each world than 64 by a landslide. |
nol
01.19.21 | odyssey was too long lol. some of the maps felt bloated imo. |
nol
01.19.21 | but it’s a good game, just not too challenging, which is fine for a Mario game. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | A quick Google says it takes about 18.5 hours to 100% mario 64 and 40+ to 100% odyssey. Doing the normal story in odyssey with minimal completion and zero post game material takes almost as long as it takes to 100% m64 lmao |
heyadam
01.19.21 | I still need to play odyssey too lmao. Maybe I’ll pick that up with trade-ins if I get bored of Tales of Vesperia |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | Id firmly plant it in my top 3 switch games alongside three houses and botw |
aydross121
01.19.21 | The great thing about Odyssey is that mario can do a bunch of parkour stuff. The movement options are really fun, on par with sunshine if not more. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | I think the movement is leagues beyond sunshine but mostly just due to sunshines shitty camera and hyper sensitive mario. He was frustrating in that game sometimes and I missed the crouch backflip.
Odyssey feels perfect. Mastering his long jump to hat toss to dive is fucking 🔥 👌 🤣lit |
aydross121
01.19.21 | yeah that one move opens up the game a ton |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | I like that the Koopa races really force you to master his more technical acrobatics. Had a lot of fun with those |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | Also ngl the online balloon game was a blast. I preferred the hiding to the hunting, you could really throw people through a fucking loop if you played your cards right with that |

1) Not Smash
2) Also Not Smash
3) Still definitely not Smash

01.19.21 | Animal Crossing is neat ig. Not very exciting but relaxing when I want it to be. I mostly enjoy the functionality of the switch, and it's a good place to collect all of my favorite games. I've gotten a lot of games that release for other platforms that I'd just prefer to play on Switch, like Ni No Kuni or Cuphead or Celeste or Final Fantasy 7. Idk, I love my switch, but the switch exclusive library isn't super overwhelmingly impressive. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | Animal Crossing was good for like a month of covid and then i lost all interest in it forever |
nol
01.19.21 | I know everyone hates SNESflix, because they want more free shit from Switch Online, but man, the SNES was an incredible era of gaming. Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 were SO GOOD, and now I'm playing Super Metroid, and this game might be even better.
SNESflix has a neat interface too. |
nol
01.19.21 | "Animal Crossing was good for like a month of covid and then i lost all interest in it forever"
yeah. I'll think I'm maybe getting interested again, and then before I know it my neighbors are saying "I haven't seen you in 150 days!"
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | I really would like to play through Super Metroid but every time I try I just find it too tedious tbh. I think I like a good Metroidvania better than I actually like the old Metroids or Vanias simply due to quality of life shit.
My friend had one of those Snes Classic things tho loaded up with all kinds of shit though and I had a blast with it. Stand outs were often games I had never heard of tho. Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer really did things for me |
nol
01.19.21 | Will have to check those two, I'm unaware of them and have been on a retro gaming kick. |
nol
01.19.21 | SNES games are kinda merciless, but SNESflix has saves states and stuff if you don't want to worry about the "built-in difficulty." Some of the save points in DKC are fucking bullshit lol. |
nol
01.19.21 | Celeste does it best with it's checkpoint feature and "die as many times as you want" vibe. There's no artificial difficulty simply from getting back to where you were, which can be rewarding but most of the time is just a pain. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.19.21 | "but SNESflix has saves states and stuff if you don't want to worry about the "built-in difficulty."
This was crucial to my enjoyment of revisiting the megaman x games lmao |
aydross121
01.20.21 | Super metroid is so worth imo, even considering the lack of qol stuff that comes with older games. 10/10 game. |
nol
01.20.21 | I’d say BOTW, but I played that on Wii U like a true playa |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | Same, but I replayed it at the end of 2020 on switch too |
heyadam
01.20.21 | I really hope botw2 is at least on par with the first one. Idk how they’re gonna pull it off tho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | I have big faith |
nol
01.20.21 | I hope they make it more of a traditional Zelda game! I think having a focused title would compliment the open-endedness of BOTW. It also looks like it’ll be darker in tone, which could be v cool. |
Keyblade
01.20.21 | I need to play my snes classic more. so many good games. have a chrono trigger save I need to get back to. haven't heard of soul blazer, looks sick. didn't know it was part of an unofficial trilogy with illusion of gaia and terranigma. think I have those 2 games |
tectactoe
01.20.21 | But that’s my point Pots, way more moons but many of them are extremely easy to collect. If you consider 100%, sure ODYSSEY is way bigger of a game. I’m talking to simply complete the main campaign i.e., final Bowser defeated, SM64 is still a bit longer than ODYSSEY. Or at the very least, equal.
Don’t get me wrong, ODYSSEY was fantastic and probably my second or third favorite main-canon Mario game, but I beat the campaign in less than a week and didn’t have as much fun chasing after postscript moons as I did postscript stars back on N64. That’s just a personal opinion obviously. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | @noler apparently the "darker tone" rumour comes from a mistranslation from an interview in which they were actually just mentioning that the teaser trailer had a "darker tone" than botw. Might still be true of the whole game but its been a topic of debate. But there have been a lot of alleged insider reports that it will be much more story driven and linear than botw which is cool |
nol
01.20.21 | lol I had no idea, I’m just going off the trailer. the teaser is much darker than the teaser for BOTW, which was all we had to go off of for a looong time |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | Yeah totes |

01.20.21 | I bet it’ll be horrorcore |

01.20.21 | I'm playing the new monster hunter demo rn this series is weird i dunno if I really get it |
Keyblade
01.20.21 | lol dude me too. I was sold on local multiplayer, turns out it's multiple switches and not couch co-op. had no idea wtf I was doing |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | yeaaah i dunno man, i don't have many friends with switch's let alone ones that would care about this game so i wouldn't be able to partake in the multiplayer aspect of it in a very gratifying way and I tried an older entry when it was on sale on wii U shop and had a lot of complaints. chalked them up to it just being dated but this new one has all the same issues
first of all tbh i'm not even all that down to just fight the same monster for 50 fucking minutes straight with a time limit and no gauge whatsoever of how much health they have. like failing to kill one monster within the time limit on the first one i played was enough to make me never want to play again. 50 fucking minutes.
but aside from that there are some little things that really bother me. the combination of having no weapon tracking and absolute zero mid attack/combo maneuverability makes me want to blow my fucking brains out. especially when all of the most actually viable weapons are these giant slow moving behemoths and your enemies are fucking fast as shit. then the depth of the resource management and the complicated controls (entire different schemes depending on whether or not your weapon is sheathed even), and awkward sheath/unsheath cycle, and 50 fucking various bars on the hub and 8 million hot button variants etc is just so non-user friendly and makes learning how to play straight up not fun. i feel like you need to have been playing this franchise for 15 years to know what the fuck ur doing. i just feel like its an excruciatingly sluggish, pointlessly punishing, and needlessly complicated series for a game where literally all you do is grind for resources into infinity
i want to like it because there is something charming about it but i dunno it kind of just fucking sucks. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.21 | like fuck at least give me the satisfaction of cutting some monsters tail off after chasing and attacking it for 30 minutes straight so i at least have some idea of how the fuck im doing progress wise lol |
Sharenge
01.20.21 | yeah I only ever played back as a kid on PSP (I got Monster Hunter World on sale but still haven't played it) but if I remember correctly, you get punished if you don't party up in those games |
heyadam
01.20.21 | Odyssey is fun and quirky as FUCK. Mario having an existential crisis being subsumed into a frog’s consciousness set the tone and I’m here 4 it |
nol
01.20.21 | Oh shit, I forgot about the Phoenix Wright Trilogy. Got that around Christmas time last year with some Switch Points, ended up sinking 150 hours into it. Super chill games with entertaining dialogue. You gotta keep your detective glasses (or gamefaqs guide) close-by if you don’t want to get stuck, but overall it was a very fun and memorable experience.
There’s something special about getting that guilty verdict haha. Very satisfying series of games to complete, something crazy always happens near the end. |

01.20.21 | it’s frequently on sale too, I knew it was gonna be a ton of fun just from the first hour or so |
