|Black Metal Bandcamp 2016 edition|
Bandcamp's pretty much the first place to go if you want to see what's popular in the black metal sphere. So, given that the year's over halfway done, I thought I'd compile a list of bm on Bandcamp from this year that's caught my eye so far. Maybe not strictly because I like it, but because I know others do, or hope they might.
Atmospheric bm junk.
|2||Harakiri for the Sky|
blackgaze shoegaze w/e. Apparently this is top BM for the moment on Bandcamp.
Blackgaze with a slight depressive bm lean to it a la Ghost Bath, but improved in pretty much every way. Definitely check it if you like blackgaze.
Folk/bm. I remember liking this album much more than their previous.
Ugly black metal/death metal. This has quite a few votes already but no reviews and I expect Sput to love it once it gets more exposure.
|6||A Diadem of Dead Stars|
Kingdoms Bathed In Golden Light
Atmospheric bm a la WitTR. They used to just rip off WitTR, but they're starting to find their own voice now. And they write 20-minute songs woohoo.
Rifftastic bm. Dynamic and crushing. Strictly bm, but with lots of little influences woven inside. And that Zdzislaw Beksinski art is killer.
Atmospheric riffs of riffing.
Skuggsja: A Piece for Mind & Mirror
Folk and black metal from that one dude from Enslaved and that other dude from Wardruna.
Microtonal polyrhythmic bullcrap that sounds like a guitar being untuned as it trems, with a drum machine crashing randomly in the background. I hate it, but apparently other people like it so give it a try for science or w/e.
Riffing dirty bm with a tiny hint of crust (I think?). Not as good as their debut, but still OK and stuff so check it ya?
Empires of Ash
Pseudo-epic bm. Not like Agalloch at all, but if you pretend hard enough it can probably fill that aching void you've been trying earnestly to not fall into these last few weeks.
Post-bm or w/e.
|14||Altar of Plagues|
Live at Club Colectiv, Bucharest
Altar of Plagues Are Dead
Triple album of Behemothy-bm, DSO-y bm, and ambient-y non-bm.
The Unmourned Past
Allir vegir til glötunar
Cold Icelandic bm.
Black metal that's kinda like WitTR-lite, without all the ambience. Dynamic, and not at all blast-oriented.
Psychedelic bm, emphasis on the psychedelic this time around.
Revisions of the Past
Post-black/blackgaze. Austin thought Social Disservices and On the Subject of Mortality had awful sound quality, so he had them remastered. They sound better now.
Weird bendy atmospheric bm. Recommend!
Sludgy post-whatever bm-ish.
|23||Woman Is The Earth|
Torch of Our Final Night
|24||A Pregnant Light|
Riffy black metal. 20 minutes of lo-fi bm split into 7 movements that flow as one piece. It's as consistent as the guy from Colloquial Sound Recordings has ever been.
|25||The Great Cold|
The Great Cold
It's basically all sorts of post-metal with occasional bouts of Woods of Desolation-y blasting bm. Riffs, trems, post-rocks, grooves, sludgedgedges, it got all dat stuff. Recommend.
|26||Book Of Sand|
Occult Anarchist Propaganda
Lo-fi black metal. If you dig Arizmenda, this project rips them off pretty well.
Female-fronted blackgaze. A really hyped debut EP that took for-ev-er to actually be released, but the hype seemed to have been worth it for many people.
|29||With the End in Mind|
Five Treasures of Snow
Sputnik black metal. It's like a more melodic Darkspace if their drum machine was sucked into a black hole and they just had to release the album without one at all.
The Spoor Of Vipers
Melodic lo-fi bm. Lotsa keyboards and bass.
Melodic death/black metal. Lotta people on Sput dig this one.
Eradication of Nescience
Rawer-ish black metal. Dat treble.
"This is weird" atmospheric black metal.
|35||Show Me A Dinosaur|
Show Me A Dinosaur
Progenitor of all Abberations
Angry Black/death metal. Attitude.
Atmospheric/melodic bm in the "epic" vein. Seems like they want to create epic melodic junk in the name of Bathory, so I suppose it warrants some attention just because of that, heh.
Als Tier ist der Mensch Nichts
Fairly dirty slightly atmospheric black metal. Their one song on their split with Paramnesia was fantastic, but this isn't *as* good. Still good dirty cacophonous black metal to get lost in, though.
Melodic black metal that's on Gilead Media, so that alone probably makes it worth mentioning.
Rawerish Finnish black metal with a slight punky edge.
Post-metal with some [sometimes-Krallice-y] black metal, and sometimes clean vocals.
Melodic black metal with some acoustics.
Rawer-ish black metal that basically takes one idea and does it for four minutes and calls it a song, for nine songs. Idk go ask TheSpirit.
Kind of a classic bm feel, but with also with alot of modern atmos-bm to it. Lots of melodic tremololos.
Post-bm that's pretty OK?
This comes out Sept 30 but it's gonna rule so it's going on the list early. Ripping bm/punk/whatever that sounds excellent. Hype.
Post-rock/black metal. Production kinda stinks but the writing is OK.
The Weight of Sunlight
Black metal with melodic death metal influence. Think In Flames with growly vox a la Saor--but black metal. OK, think *Panopticon*, but with even more melodeath influence. It's quite good.
Black metal shoegaze from Ukraine. It's fairly amateurish but in a way that kind of makes it charming. Happy up-beat music with raspy croaking vocals.
Through The Darkness
Black/death metal that, according to PortalofPerfection, will "tear your face directly the **** off." Sounds like a pretty decent recommendation.
