Reader Appreciation

As a regular contributor to sputnik, I often find myself taking advantage of what has been bestowed upon me (and all of us). Yes, this is just a music website/forum, but let's be honest, music is a huge passion for most of us. It's the reason we are here right now, staring intently at our glowing monitors and neglecting our social lives. It's the reason we engage in meaningful discussions about lyrics, make recommendations to our fellow site members, and get involved in heated debates about our favorite bands and genres. It's the reason we get butt hurt and call each other flaming piles of donkey poo. It's also an excuse to troll neg people who annoy the bejeezus out of us like sonictheplummer and bulldog. But most importantly, it is the catalyst behind writing reviews about musical pieces that we feel strongly about (one way or another). Growing up I always had a love for music and a passion for writing. I would often write reviews that nobody else would read, only to discard them moments later. Now, as a contributing reviewer for this site, I feel that the music I listen to and my insights about that music is heard by many - because I can post a review here, and it is made available for hundreds if not thousands of people to read, agree, disagree, troll me, or do whatever they want to. From time to time I find myself churning out a review just to do my time or fill some imaginary obligation that I have as a contributor. But luckily, I am also aware of how much time certain members of this site put into reading reviews. After all, reading the review is just as important, if not more important, than writing it...all of the opinions, edits, critiques, general observations, etc. made by regulars, lurkers, and newcomers takes time and effort. Most of all, it makes this thing that we do here worth it. For very few of us is music criticism a profession or even as aspired profession; it's a hobby, and it's one that some of us take with a grain of salt and others take rather seriously. But regardless of your outlook, I think we can all agree that it is nice to know that people are paying attention to your contributions - even if they make fun of you to show it. I guess my point is this: sputnik rules, and it's an awesome platform to make your opinions heard and to display your writing talent. But don't take it for granted. Maybe spend less time forcing out a review that you didn't really want to write, and more time reading other reviews and discussing music that you are truly passionate about. Reading these reviews and arguing your points will make you a better/more inspired writer when you do get the itch to review an album, and having one review that you can proudly hang your name on feels a lot better than 6 reviews that you will forget about the next day. Trust me, I have experienced both. So...yeah...thanks to everyone who loyally follows their favorite writers on this site, to those who offer constructive criticism to new users (or old users who just suck), and to those who deservedly mock and harass us for being assholes. You are the reason I keep reviewing music here, and will continue to indefinitely. You make this site what it is; enjoy it.
