03.23.21 | Hmm, now how about DEEZ ones, folks??? |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Kewl!!!!!!! I know both artists, but I could do with a refresh on these two records. Still h~y~p~e~d! |
dedex
03.23.21 | Nice, I need a Ah Um refresh. Last time I listened to The Epic I found it boring, gonna listen to it in 3 times this time |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Before this journey started, I had never jammed any Mingus past Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (which is like so good and I'm silly for not doing) so seeing the Clown first and now moving into Ah Um has got me very. very. excited. |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Sweet approach, dedex! Would be interesting to maybe hear the discs separated by a day, and really see how if they have their own flavors |
dedex
03.23.21 | ok you know what imma do that exactly |
Pangea
03.23.21 | Oh this time i have heard both of them! It's been years since i heard the epic though so that should be fun.
1 is a masterpiece. I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but i actually do prefer the edited version for Ah Um. The extended version tends to drag a little for me |
rellik009
03.23.21 | Ah Um is an absolute goat Mingus forever j/ j/ j/
The Epic looks.... epic, so I'll czech it asap |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | I have Ah Um 3.0d. We're going to find out why this week. Or whether I was crazy back when I did that.
Or we won't find anything out about this at all. That's possible too. |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Ok. From the first 5 minutes alone it turns out I certainly was crazy back then. If this same level is kept throughout this is easily in 4.0-4.5 territory. |
dedex
03.23.21 | i was CERTAIN you're crazy Trif |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | The Jazz Year plot thickens! Will this be the first of many redemption arcs? |
Pheromone
03.23.21 | ok ok ok ok ok i am ready to jazz |
dedex
03.23.21 | we've got the jazz |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Hell yeah now we got ourselves a comment section. Sup, gorgeous? |
Deez
03.23.21 | Yo you were Crazy Trif! Energy is so upfront on much of that record. Hail Mingus!
What happened to my original 2 picks tho? Porp? First 2 pics were Cecil taylor and Coltane/Pharaoh live in seattle. |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Oh my, I misunderstood! I totally goofed the shout box messaging and thought you meant swap the other two out for these two oh no I made a mess of things |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | I can nix this if you like, Deez, we already tricked Trif into rejamming Ah Um for the great good. The two originals were the Coltrane/Sanders live record and Cecil Taylor - Conquistador, if memory serves |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Maybe this was pure cosmic energy forcing me to reevaluate my questionable life choices of yore that muddled porc's otherwise oh so bright mind. I think it was so. And since I rectified my mistakes, the true list has come out. |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | You have fallen straight into Deez and my scheming hands with your beautifully timely jamming! 😈 |
Deez
03.23.21 | I mean im enjoying the Mingus love indeed. Maybe switch Cecil for Kamasi (sorry big man!) No I thought you asked for a 3rd thats why I was also confused hahah these 2 picks were to 'calm' the balance of the other 2 which are pretty hectic. Mingus is what I would give someone who didnt like jazz, Cecil I definitely wouldnt haha All good man! |
Deez
03.23.21 | Hahahah trif. Yayyy
I sit in a corner of a smoke filled bar with my scotch with the sounds of a trombone vibrating through the glasses and tip my pork pie hat in you direction and murmur 'this was meant to be' |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Why are so many people talking about Kamasi Washington in the comments? So weird. |
dedex
03.23.21 | who's that Washington chap? |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Hahaha lots of love for the jazz-bros of Sput! j/j/j/j/j/ and all that.
Also "This is the album that was always in this spot here in this list." 😁🌞✨🎺 |
Deez
03.23.21 | The guy in American Gangster? |
dedex
03.23.21 | ah yes thx Deez |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Cecil will have to wait for a little bit, I (not completely) accidentally gave in to some Fela urges and this is going to take a while. It was super hard to type this message while grooving so hard and with limbs flying everywhere. |
Deez
03.23.21 | For the record I obviously do also LOVE "the epic' ofcourse hence the ghost pick but I generally like the more 'madcap' if you will. Charlie was the smooth to the rough.
And everyone should check out 'John Coltrane ft Pharoe Sanders- Live In seattle' if you do too. Chaotic, drug fuelled madness.
And of course RIP the mighty Cecil Taylor. The fact he never liked the label 'Free Jazz' shows how free he actually was with his music haha. |
Deez
03.23.21 | @Trif
Fela is one of the few things that makes me bop. Im not a dancer. Its not pretty but its too hard to not to Dance to Fela. |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | So true! It is impossible not to let the groove take over and make your body move uncontrollably. |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Very interesting stuff, and feels relevant to my reading life tonight, too! Just got my copy of the Henry Cow - The World is a Problem book in the mail today, and reading through the introduction it is speaking of the convergence of free improvisations coming independently from both “uncomposed” John Cage influenced areas and free jazz as a near purely live spontaneous experience after Coltrane and Coleman broke down the idea of improvisations as something only intended for an individual during solo sections. |
porcupinetheater
03.23.21 | Fela’s music is a living creature that latches on to your brainstem and steals away control, usually for 25-35 minutes at a time, give or take. Whatta beast! |
Trifolium
03.23.21 | Absolutely. Nothing out of his extensive discog has disappointed me on this front either. Or any other front for that matter. One of the all-time greats.
Looking forward to the Cecil though! |
Deez
03.23.21 | Wow Fantastic Porp. Im definitely no Jazz aficionado despite listening to a lot of it and as much as my adoration for out-there music I did struggle initially with the extreme nature of huge, largely improv pieces. I mean it just sounded like everyone hitting whatever they want at the same time irregardless. Like giving 4 babies some plastic instruments and they are bashing them against the floor and making pointless sometimes irritating (always irritating in babies cases) directionless noise. Especially to the untrained ear or uneducated. I mean this is off the Blue Note website about Cecil Taylor
"Taylor’s intense atonal percussive approach involves playing the piano as if it were a set of drums" hahah what?? I couldnt never get my head around stuff like that initially. Its not easy listening. |
bgillesp
03.23.21 | On the discussion of Kamasi Washington, I do not have any of his records at more than a 4/5, yet I have seem him live twice and would not give either show even a shred less than 5/5. So never miss that chance if you get one |
bgillesp
03.23.21 | I’ll be new to Cecil Taylor this week so I am excited. Love Ah Um but a revisit is certainly welcome |
Deez
03.23.21 | I was away the last time he played here and by my friends said exactly the same. Unstoppable live. Tear jerkingly good.
|
EyesWideShut
03.23.21 | J/ fuck yea |
dedex
03.24.21 | Starting Ah Um NOW! |
Trifolium
03.24.21 | NICE! Perhaps I'll join you after this lovely 2021 find: Snowpoet - Wait For Me. |
dedex
03.24.21 | real cool listen, will jam again l8er this afternoon |
Deez
03.24.21 | Want this pretty bad

dedex
03.25.21 | alright, starting Conquistador! about NOW |
dedex
03.25.21 | wasn't really convinced tbh, some parts felt really random to me... will jam it again this afternoon ! |
Pheromone
03.25.21 | is it bad that this might be my first 2-listening jazz week, with mine coming up next week
do i have malicious intention? am i simply tryna be seen as less than a truant? |
porcupinetheater
03.25.21 | Settle down, jazz class, Professor Deez is running late (his ferret got into the laundry chute again) but he'll be here in a few minutes. Time to call the roll |
Deez
03.25.21 | @dedex
Haha that why i picked it mate. The rough with the smooth. Its not an easy listen and not for everyone. For me the freeness and the spontaneous nature of it is what I love. Like when Listen to any avant garde i want it to mess my head up, and struggle to make sense of it. Theyre like cascading melodies. Every time it gets close to being built up you hear it crashing all down. I used to try and focus more on the horns and let the madness kind of go on behind unil it forces you out. I originally had Coltrane ft Thelonious Live In Seattle which is also pretty mad cap but cecil takes the biscuit. Incredible pianist. |
Pheromone
03.25.21 | here sir, christ you're late
haha been here all along *takes off jacket* |
Deez
03.25.21 | Apologies Class I was up late with a fine dark skinned lady sipping some lagavullin and explaining the intricacies of Miles Davis until late then we made love to the sweet sound on Chick Correas organ which I bought off him when he came to my club back in 61 |
dedex
03.25.21 | lagavullin 💖 |
bgillesp
03.26.21 | Gonna try to get on these tonight |
bgillesp
03.27.21 | Okay so I listened to Conquistador and it went straight over my head. I wasn’t completely focused on it, so I feel like I just missed it all. Gonna try again but it’s not an easy listen. Hopefully it’s rewarding if you conquer (pun intended) it though. |
Deez
03.27.21 | Its insanely difficult mate hahah I thought id pick an easy and a really hard for the contrast. |
bgillesp
03.28.21 | Listening again now with much more focus and it’s going a lot better :)
j/ |
dedex
03.29.21 | new list WHEN |
Trifolium
03.29.21 | CT is on my list for today, after that I'm ready for the new one too dedex!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope PhePhe is too ✨⚡⚡⚡ |
Pheromone
03.29.21 | doing it now my luvs |
Trifolium
03.29.21 | 😍 |
Trifolium
03.29.21 | Cecil Taylor is super intense. I like how there still is some room between the different instruments, mainly because of the spacious production. |
Deez
03.29.21 | Word! |
Deez
03.29.21 | I think my fave description is on youtube some dude saying for some reasonhe envisions a tower of marble but they keep falling down. Hahahhah perfect |
Trifolium
03.30.21 | Yeah I saw that exact comment yesterday haha! Totally works for him, agreed. Thanks for these Deez, it was a good one! |
Pangea
03.30.21 | Oh 2 is pretty wild yes! i liked it, but i'm going to need to do a more focused listen later |
Deez
03.30.21 | wild indeedy!± It gets hard to focus to at points ill admit that much haha
I do like that in my music (at times) when its kind of sounds all over the place and you have to make some sense of it.
Cheers Trif. ONWARD! x |
porcupinetheater
04.01.21 | Fuck me if that last track on Conquistador ain't a monster
Can't put my finger on why it grabbed me by the throat over the other 2 cuts, but something about the trading instrument battering and Cecil playing like acid rain |
porcupinetheater
04.01.21 | And it's technically a bonus track? Whaaa? |
Deez
04.01.21 | Ah the alternate take! Yeah its better than the original that made the album for sure. Its harsher, more fierce. |
