5.0 classic
Agalloch The Mantle
Agalloch are one of the greatest bands in the world, beyond the shadow of a doubt. And The Mantle is their piece de resistance, an album full of atmospheric beauty that captures the emptiness and isolation, but also the brief idylls that can accompany a winter landscape. This is truly breathtaking, and an album that I can listen to, time and again and be forever caught up in the perfect atmosphere they have managed to capture. There is not a second of music that they don't nail.
Agalloch Ashes Against The Grain
Anathema Weather Systems
I didn't think they could top Judgement, but shit, this is fucking insane, THIS IS FUCKING INSANE. Probably the most heart-rendingly beautiful album in the career of a band that has mastered thee art of making heart-rendingly beautiful albums.

Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Dream Theater has its fair share of detractors (perhaps more than its fair share), many of whom complain of
LaBrie's vocal work killing the music for them. I have always been a huge LaBrie fan, and I would like to use
Scenes from a Memory as the album to support my case. LaBrie shows off impressive range and dynamics over
the course of this winding, nearly inarguable epic. But it isn't just James who clicks on this album; every bit of
the music works like a puzzle, perhaps at first seeming challenging, confusing. However, eventually the pieces
all fall into place to create an absolutely stunning portrait. Scenes from a Memory is a classic in every sense of
the word.

Grave You'll Never See...
This album is pretty much why I love the entire OSDM style. I mean, sure it's more simple than Left Hand Path or Like an Everflowing Stream (which are great in their own right), but something about this album sticks out to me. The riffs are just spot on, and Grave doesn't fuck with any extra bullshit beyond that. This is THE meat and potatoes death metal album.

My Dying Bride A Map Of All Our Failures
This falls only just short of The Angel & the Dark River for me. I've always considered myself a pretty huge My Dying Bride fan, even of what's generally considered their lesser albums, but even with that said, this release left me fucking floored. Aaron Stainthorpe gives some of his most emotional vocal performances, all atop a wonderful dance of melancholy instrumentals. God damn, My Dying Bride still knows how to make a brilliant doom album, even after a couple decades.
Ninja Sex Party Strawberries and Cream
This shit is the bees' (bee's?) knees. This 5.0 isn't even a humor rating. Swear to God, this is a fucking classic in the humor band area. Funny, clever lyrics, and you'll have these songs stick in your head for years. Plus, they get in and out and leave an impact in their wake. They're the Napalm Death of Comedic Synth-pop.

The Devin Townsend Project Ki
How this is generally held in the lower half of Devin's discography I will never know. I love this album just as much as Ocean Machine or Terria. Perhaps even more, and it's certainly my favorite from the project.rThe musicians work so smoothly together that every single song seems to take flight in whichever direction it decides to go, feeling both improvisational and loose, but never unfocused. The atmosphere in each track is incredible, whether it's the let loose, pull back anger of Disruptr or Heaven Send, the Devy does Elvis blues rock feel of Trainfire, the tight nightclub groove of Coast, or the beautiful calm escapades that seem to float above the air on album highlights Terminal, Lady Helen, and Ki. But this album is perfect from start to finish.

I broke my toe to this album while brushing my teeth. I guess I'm lucky I didn't impale the back of my head on the toothbrush.

Woods of Desolation Torn Beyond Reason
Woods of Ypres Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light
I enjoy every album Woods of Ypres has released. I consider myself a pretty big fan of the band, but this is their high point. Hearing this immediately after David Gold's death was incredibly disheartening, and hearing Alternate Ending for the first time brought tears to my eyes - in that moment, I don't think I've ever been more impacted by the death of someone that I didn't know personally. Perhaps giving this a 5 is slightly contingent on the heightened emotional impact because of the events surrounding the album, but even without that, this is truly an extraordinary record, that far outstrips the remainder of their already excellent discography. It's hugely tragic what occurred, but few albums could stand as a better legacy.

Porcupine Tree The Incident
The main, 55 minute, 14 movement title track is worth a 5 rating, easily. Unfortunately, the album's quality takes a severe dive on the second disk, which, while still an occasionally decent listen, is some of the weakest Porcupine Tree material ever recorded. Still, it's definitely a smaller portion of the record than The Incident (the song), so it doesn't bring down the album rating all that drastically.

Biffy Clyro Only Revolutions
This album receives far too much flak from long-standing fans of Biffy Clyro, and while this (as well as their previous album, Puzzle) are great departures from what their earlier releases, taken in it's own right Only Revolutions is a fantastically well-made album on all fronts. All the instruments are handled with an almost cinematic flair, Simon Neil's vocal performance is marvelous throughout, and the songs themselves are a distinct cut above the average rock radio fare. My personal favorite track at the moment would be Whoreses, but they all so strong that I find that statement fluctuates by the day. This is album is without a doubt a departure from the Biffy Clyro of the best, but it manages to maintain the brilliance of those albums, and quite frankly, isn't that the most important way for a band to stay the same?

Systematic Chaos is one of the two stumbles in Dream Theater's rather illustrious career. (The other being When Dream and Day Unite, before they even acquired James LaBrie as a vocalist.) Thergothon Stream From The Heavens
Its contextual importance in the field of funeral doom far surpasses its actual quality. Thergothon gets credit purely because of when they released the album. Unlike Skepticism, where the music itself is incredibly well done, emotional funeral doom, this is more Until Death Overtakes Me plodding boilerplate funeral doom.

This is basically funeral doom if you cut out all the atmosphere. If you want to listen to thin droning guitars and deep gutturals without any substance to back it up whatsoever, than oh boy, have The Ethereal got an album for you!

Xerath II
The instrumentation on this album is passable. The vocals are nothing to write home about, but they don't kill the music either. Generally, combining these two elements would provide a 2.5 average rating, maybe a low 3. But the songwriting on II is just so goddamn boring, I don't remember anything about the music just played mere seconds before. This stuff could be hospital anesthetic for brain surgery. Too heavy to lull you to sleep, but it puts you in quite the stupor.

Between the Buried and Me Between the Buried and Me
Between the Buried and Me has been steadily growing on me throughout my time on this site, and by now, I can fully say that I adore Colors, The Great Misdirect, Alaska, and the Silent Circus. But this eponymous debut continues in its astounding ability to hold absolutely nothing of interest. One of the most disappointing releases by an otherwise excellent band out there today.

Body Count Body Count
Body Count has absolutely no reason to exist. I won't go into the beyond annoying instrumentals, the absolutely terrible vocals, the excruciatingly boring and simplistic writing...rI won't go into it, because there's only one thing that needs to be taken away from this. It doesn't work, on any number of levels. It's layer upon layer of crimes against the music industry (what with the members and the subject matter, perhaps they were attempting some criminal activity). It all culminates in an Inception-like mindscrew made up of nightmares and ear-gouging.
Body Count Violent Demise: The Last Days
Brain Drill Quantum Catastrophe
Take a bunch of instruments, and throw them in a blender. Now mash those suckers up into an un-discernible mush, while recording the sound that results. Go ahead, I'll wait. rRight, you're back. Congratulations, you have just created your own home-made Brain Drill album, without any 10 dollar purchase price!
