02.21.21 | Oh damn no working art for the Jazzyfatnastees, what a bummer! Anything goes with the jazzyfatnastees.
Take it away, Trif! |
Pangea
02.21.21 | nice i have been meaning to check fela kuti for a while j/ |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | Last serving gig I had got to run the playlist, whole thing on shuffle. Had Zombie on there. There was a lapsed anarchist who came in most days for a drink on his lunch break, and Zombie always seemed to come on while he was in. One day, thing comes on like clockwork, Dude stands up (place was empty, no biggie, nice guy) and just belts out something like, "God fucking dammit, I sell out and now Fela's fucking haunting me." J/ |
Trifolium
02.21.21 | Hahahaha that story is perfect porc!! Thanks for sharing my album choices with the world (๐) and let's GOOOOOOOO everyone!!!!! |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | And thank you for the beautiful looking tour, and those tantalizing write-ups! Really neat pairing, and I'm *jazzed* to dive in! |
Sabrutin
02.21.21 | Gotta check that trilogy, you can never have enough albums with a take of Some Other Time, even Kind of Blue quotes its piano theme |
Trifolium
02.21.21 | (Oh oooops, I see a typo now, it of course should be Marty, not Mary...) |
Trifolium
02.21.21 | "Gotta check that trilogy"
YES!!!! |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | Trif you gotta get your eyes checked you silly goose, what typo?
Itโs an editing day, so I think Ima put my jazzy swim trunks on dive straight into some Bill freaking Evans with Mary Morell on the skins |
bgillesp
02.21.21 | Iโm not sure exactly how this works but I added some recs to that google sheet |
bgillesp
02.21.21 | I really need to get some Bill Evans listening done so now seems like a good time to start |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | Hell yeah, bg! Not really any super specific rules, basically just everyone takes turns putting 2ish jazz albums up a week so we're all just having a guided jazz tour and having similar experiences to keep the discourse flowing
There's more deets about it on the last list I made iffin' yer curious, but fucking swell dandy sign-up! |
Pheromone
02.21.21 | I am fundamentally buzzed FOR this
new headphones bought and the timbre is heavy, knees week, jazz week ready |

02.21.21 | hey i want to give brown note bum pucker jazz recs |
Trifolium
02.21.21 | Nice!!!! Hope you love these, fellow jazzing Sputters!!!!! |
bgillesp
02.21.21 | Sounds good. Gonna try really hard to keep up with this and discuss them with yโall but I donโt have much time to listen to music at my current job so we will see |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | No worries at missed things, jump in where you can! We are certainly not grading for attendance |
Trifolium
02.21.21 | Also thank you and hahaha porc @Mary M.
Curious to hear your thoughts bgillesp! |
porcupinetheater
02.21.21 | Holy shit Trif, going through the whole live in Paris set, Morell's drum solo in Gloria's Step is legit goat territory, this is fucking blowing my mind |

02.22.21 | Dude omg yes I know that man is so good ๐ So super fluid and tasteful and I don't know, _there_. Like it's totally supposed to be that way or something. |
Trifolium
02.22.21 | Do you mean all three volumes with the whole set? If so: ๐โ๏ธ |
dedex
02.22.21 | oh damn no I was only planning to listen to vol.3! no time to jam the whole thang lol |
Trifolium
02.22.21 | No I meant porc! I didn't expect anyone to do that haha, Vol. 3 alone is quite long already. Which coincidentally was no problem at all because Fela's album is very short. |
porcupinetheater
02.22.21 | Yes!! I have a lot of video editing projects on my plate atm and before I get the sound in there it's just looking at silent pictures for hours, the perfect time to consume just a heaping helping of JAZZ |
parksungjoon
02.22.21 | woah tha tsounds cool actually |
porcupinetheater
02.22.21 | So the timing of just such a helping couldn'ta been more perfectttt |
porcupinetheater
02.22.21 | Btw Park did you want to hop in on hosting a week with that rec, or are you just providing it for our rolodexes? |
parksungjoon
02.22.21 | just something drmaximus' list reminded me
check if you feel like it :] |
porcupinetheater
02.22.21 | Hell yeah, 'preciate! Been meaning to check out some Cecil Taylor, and if we're all just animals reacting to cool looking things at heart, that is a cool cool album cover just begging to be jammed |
Trifolium
02.22.21 | Hmm nice, will jam that one this week park, since I know of know this week's albums already ๐
Sounds like a great occasion to listen to a llloooootttttt of Evans yes porc!!! |
dedex
02.22.21 | the Evans live album is lovely so far |
Trifolium
02.22.21 | I decided going for all of the volumes back to back anyway haha, so I'll join you in about two hours' worth of material ๐ |
Trifolium
02.22.21 | By the way porc, in Nardis (from the Evans record) you can easily hear voices during the drum solo (!!!!) as well. Haha! Such a nice touch, shows how concentrated you have to be for that, man! |
porcupinetheater
02.23.21 | Starting to think these lists might have been a fiscal mistake, because there is a non-0 chance I impulse buy an upright bass before the year is up

02.23.21 | "because my two friends chose guitar"
make that one friend who is a godly guitarist AND drummer. i now fill the role of virtuoso keyboardist and bass cuck |
LeddSledd
02.23.21 | it makes tasty enough sounds to be worth it |
parksungjoon
02.23.21 | >i now fill the role of virtuoso keyboardist and bass cuck
i mean... whats stopping you from writing more interesting basslines? |
LeddSledd
02.23.21 | bc he's way better than i am and i'm a far better pianist
most of my interesting ideas are when i'm just playing around, we hardly ever record them |
parksungjoon
02.23.21 | fair enough i dont know too much about the dynamics of multiple people coming together to make music so ill drop it |
LeddSledd
02.23.21 | no you're cool lol
i'd rather reside in the background with something cool to do anyway, he's much more of a spotlight kinda guy |
parksungjoon
02.23.21 | bass guitar being underutilised in rock and derived music is a meme that is as frustrating as it is enduring, and there isnt really any reason for it to be that way... |
parksungjoon
02.23.21 | you take a look at some jazz classics and it should be crystal clear that any of the usual instruments in an ensemble can become captivating weapons of expression and justice |
parksungjoon
02.23.21 | or evne prog, despite its occasional self-indulgent excesses |
porcupinetheater
02.23.21 | Amen, it's really mostly just rock music that bass gets so often relegated to an unobtrusive support role. One of the reasons noise rock is one of my big things, bass for the grinding drive that carries the whole song, guitars making freak-noise texture things
Or yeah fuckin' jazz, guitars rarely need apply. |
porcupinetheater
02.23.21 | Unless it's Sonny Sharrock showing up, six-strings letter rip in that case |
LeddSledd
02.23.21 | that's why i crave da upright man!
ik you don't need a large expensive instrument to be a compelling bassist, but just think what i could do if i had one...
re: bass undermining - friends and i have very stylistically different ideas of what music we'd like to compose so it often becomes pretty straightforward and rockish which is why it's usually that way. something we've been trying to work on |
Pangea
02.23.21 | Oh that bill evans album is so nice. love the piano playing, so soulful and swinging, almost like it's alive on its own. drums and bass sound great as well. it's really loose playing, but always interesting. gonna listen to the other volumes as well |
Trifolium
02.23.21 | Yippppeeeee, happy you dig it Pangea! It's such a lovely bunch of records, I could in fact 5.0 all of them to be honest. But that felt a little tooooo weird, so I didn't just do that yet. Perhaps I will in the future. I'm also waiting for inspiration to strike to review (one of) them, hope that will happen someday. |
Pangea
02.23.21 | always 5.0 if you feel it in your heart trif |

02.23.21 | ... Yes actually that is true. Re-thinking my ways now... |

02.24.21 | the fela kuti album grooves so nicely. awesome album |
dedex
02.24.21 | Will listen to the fela one after lunch, im excited |
Trifolium
02.24.21 | Hmmm, yes, it's so good! He's completely won me over, banger after banger that discog. One of my fave recent finds (hopped on board very late, haha!). |
parksungjoon
02.24.21 | better late than never |
Trifolium
02.24.21 | Very true, and I'm SO happy I finally decided to give his work a go. Exactly, 100%, right in my zone of interest.
You know how that sometimes feels like you've made a friend for life? That's what it feels like to me, discovering Fela Kuti. |
parksungjoon
02.24.21 | :] |
Pheromone
02.25.21 | I will get around to these soon as Trif is the jazz rec king.
I think I have my two albums figured out for when I get to this. (Don't look at my most recent rating unless you want a spoiler!!!!) |
bgillesp
02.25.21 | Gonna get on these tonight or tomorrow as I am getting sick and will be out of work. Hereโs to hoping for a good test result tomorrow |
porcupinetheater
02.26.21 | Oh my God Shakara is incredible (surprise of the century! :D)
If you play Fela in a graveyard get ready to hear a sprawling rap-rap-rap from below, cause even the corpses gonna be vibing these grooves |
Trifolium
02.26.21 | I'm hoping for you bgillesp!
And I'm also hoping the both of you will like this. |
Trifolium
02.26.21 | Omg yes porc!!!! We posted at the exact same time too haha. But it's lovely indeed! Haven't heard any Fela that I dislike yet. |
porcupinetheater
02.26.21 | Lmao Trif!! The jazz is pumping so hard that we're even synchronized across continents!
At this point, I'd be shocked if there's a Fela record that would warrant below a 3, and even that might be stretching it! |
porcupinetheater
02.26.21 | It's music legit bordering on psychosomatic for me, like I'm getting these warm sort of tingles in my collar bone jamming this, no exaggeration.
Same place I first feel psychs when I'm coming up, very very happy about this development |
Trifolium
02.26.21 | Yes yes yes! Jazz conquers all.
And agreed (edit: referring to the impossible below-3.0-ness). I don't think that's even possible anymore. That man IS music and those who surround him are incredible too. Mary for instance, what a drummer!!! |
porcupinetheater
02.26.21 | Thank you for proper CRUSHING the rec's this week, bb |

02.26.21 | Glad you enjoyed them ๐

dedex
02.26.21 | Will do! |

02.26.21 | Oooooh, even more hype now that it all becomes so concrete ๐๐๐๐ |
bgillesp
02.26.21 | Got through most of the live in Paris release last night and very much enjoyed it. Bill Evans just has that very characteristic smoothness to his playing style. Found a few moments where the improv got a little loose and everyone really had to think on their feet which I really enjoy. |
Trifolium
02.26.21 | Oh nice! And yes that is what I really like about Evans' playing. So smooth and effortless. And those improv sections are lovely too, agreed. |
Dewinged
02.26.21 | Damn I blink and I'm already late! Gonna start scratching my vault for some recs while I catch up! Nice write-ups Trif! |
Trifolium
02.26.21 | Thanks Dewi, I love them both a lot as you can see. They're so nice. |
bgillesp
02.26.21 | Well I got bad news about my test, but at least that means itโll be easy to keep up with these |
someone
02.26.21 | was it a medical test or an exam? |

02.26.21 | Oh no sorry to hear that! Wish you well, gilles!
I think it was a COVID test someone. |
someone
02.26.21 | i see, from what my surroundings tell me it's either gonna be the smoothest sick leave you'll ever have or literally the end of your life.
dunno, the census doesn't seem to agree with itself |

02.26.21 | Yeah, been feeling pretty rough in waves. Just hoping it doesnโt get worse |
bgillesp
03.01.21 | Okay I finished up the Bill Evans album. Been feeling a lot better. Gonna check Fela today |
Trifolium
03.01.21 | Ooh yeah, happy to hear that. About the feeling better part.
And glad to hear Evans appreciation! |
bgillesp
03.02.21 | And Shakara was indeed awesome except I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the lyrics on Lady |
someone
06.01.21 | finally getting around to this. listening to the whole of Bill Evans' concert |
