| The Shadow Tapping Your Window
I am alone here, and slowly crawling out of my skin. These are the
songs that leave me feeling unsettled, as if someone is out there, just
out of sight... | 6 | Kayo Dot Offramp Cycle, Pattern 22
It's difficult to put my finger on, but there's something in the melodies, the
rhythm, the surreal words - from the beginning, something seems just slightly
wrong in a way that slips through the cracks of the consciousness. And then that
line comes in - "Blood on my hands, and the thing in the back seat... That used
to be human." | 5 | Strapping Young Lad Info Dump
Sometimes this song seems unnecessary, long and drawn out with not much of
anything happening. And sometimes it is the most affecting listen on Alien. Like
now, as I sit alone, and the wind blows something against the glass, and I think I
can see something in the tree line around the back of the house, just through the
blinds not quite drawn tight enough. And here the electronics buzz almost
subliminally, building to an explosion of noise that never comes, and so the
tension just keeps building. | 4 | Bloodrock D.O.A.
I don't like contemplating my own death - so when a song begins like an old 70s
epic, and slowly reveals the perspective of a man after an accident as he realizes
the imminence of his own death, it chills me to the bone. | 3 | Porcupine Tree Heartattack in a Layby
And on the other hand, it is just as unsettling when death draws upon us
unrecognized. A man just doesn't feels a little sick, a little weak. As his eyes grow
tired, he can't wait to drive home and see his wife again... | 2 | Suicide Frankie Teardrop
Let's hear it for Frankie. The screams that populate the sparse musical landscapes
(just the tapping of a keyboard), are like a descent into Hell itself. | 1 | Hexvessel Woods to Conjure
This is the reason the list was made - the haunting instrumentals coupled with the
ever more sinister existential horror, presented with just enough ambiguity to
keep the feelings from taking a tangible form - this is the song that makes me feel
something is wrong, but something that I can never see. This song is the tapping
shadow. | |
